As the labour force faces huge demands to make up for years when skilled labour left the province for greener pastures, and the current situation where a large bulk of skilled labour prepares for retirement, some good news.
In a report from the Province today, word that the number of apprenticeships in the province is up over target numbers.
As of January 31, 2006, the number of registered apprentices/trainees has increased to 25,404, exceeding the 2005/06 target of 24,000 apprentices, with two months remaining in the fiscal year. The number of apprentices is up 73 per cent from 14,676 on March 31, 2004, when the Industry Training Authority was launched. At the same time, employer involvement also continues to grow, with 8,557 employer/sponsors currently offering placements to apprentices, an increase of more than 26 per cent.
The ITA has also surpassed its 2005/06 target to issue 2,400 industry training credentials.
When it was established in 2004, the ITA's mandate was to "ensure an industry training system in B.C. that is flexible, accountable and industry led – one that better aligns training outcomes with labour market needs."
