Red Light Camera at 15th and Ospika

Prince George, B.C. – You will have to avoid the urge to hit the gas when the lights at 15th and  Ospika turn yellow. That intersection is the only one in Prince George that will be part of the new upgraded Intersection Safety Camera (ISC) program being rolled out in the province.  In fact, it is the only intersection north of Kamloops that will have  a new  "Red Light" camera.

New digital cameras will be placed at 140 sites in 26 communities across B.C., but as mentioned, only one will be placed in Prince George. Signs will be prominently posted at the intersection  to advise drivers that ISC cameras are in place.

The stats on Ospika and 15th say that intersection is the scene of 26 crashes per year, and there were 73 injuries at that intersection between 2002 and 2008.

ICBC says the cameras will be activated remotely at times when data shows the greatest risk for a crash and when they’re likely to have the biggest impact on driving behaviour.

The digital cameras are being phased in throughout the province with full implementation expected by the end of 2011.  The old cameras are being removed.

Violation tickets carry a $167 fine, which can be reduced by $25 if paid within 30 days. B.C. municipalities will continue to receive all net revenue from traffic fines, to help them enhance their policing and community-based public safety programs.

it may be a new camera, but there has been a red light camera setup located there for a long time.
Also 15th and the bypass, and Tyner Blvd and Highway 16W...and out on the Hart there is one too....all have been in those locations for a long time..

Its all in the name of one big police state.
well eagle if people obeyed the rules these cameras wouldn't be needed... so not a police but a a stupidity state...
and since this is an ICBC inititative, pretty hard to blame the police on this one...
money money money. That`s all this is about.
So the most needed intersection in the city is a block and a half from the ICBC offices.

To me,that's just funny.
What this is all about is people making stupid choices. ICBC wants to keep our rates down or make people who make those choices pay up for their mistakes.
Sounds pretty good to me.
BCRacer - if Im not mistaken, this intersection will now have a full time dedicated camera. The other locations you mentioned are all set up for it but they only have one camera that they rotate through the locations.

Yup I just repeated what Slim2229 wrote. Saves me some time.
I here ICBC will take over as BC's new police force after the RCMP are dumped.
Kolburg, funny!
And BC Racer, what you said!
put a trafick light up at 15th and tabor also...i see accident there every month at least
Tax collection under the guise of public safety. Nothing more, nothing less. The gov't taking monetary advantage of what no one will ever cure humans from doing. That being, stupid things while driving.
While I agree with the tax grab sentiments I will offer up this - tax dollars have to come from somewhere so I have no problem with stupid people paying their share...
:-)
hopefully they have the lights fixed. I've sat through the lights for 3 cycles before running it as the sensor wouldn't pick that I was there.
Any care to enlighten me on how this camera will make that intersection safer?? How about remove the ice from the road and spread some gravel?

After reading the post it seems that it is not a "red light" camera at all. It's a yellow light camera. If I remember correctly, the old camera there was strictly for collisions and it was moved around the city to different locations.
I'd sure like to here most of your stories after you are hit by someone in another vehicle. As I can foresee it now, "Where were the police - why wasn't that camera at XYZ intersection it would have shown them I was right" Arm chair quarterbacking its a great sport
I don't think those older cameras have been in use for some time now. No one mentioned that to us. But they were red light cameras. Supertech, you should find out how they work. If you run over the sensor after the red light has been activated, they took your picture, not before that.

Aside from that, I sure get a kick out of people flashing their high beams before an intersection or even still tooting their horns. That audio signal info that was put out a few years ago was an April fool's joke put on by one of our radio stations. I guess some people are still in the dark over that one! Ha, ha.
