Prince George, B.C. – Northern Bear Awareness says 2010 was a difficult one for bears in Prince George.
The Conservation Officer Service received over 1900 complaints from Prince George residents in 2010 from March until December. This resulted in the destruction of 87 bears in our city (1 grizzly bear and 86 black bears), nearly twice the annual average in the last ten years. Prince George consistently destroys more bears than any other city each year in British Columbia.
The high number of complaints is attributed to the poor food year for the bears, with a hot summer which dried up the majority of the natural food crops such as berries. This forced many animals to wander into the city in search of sustenance, leading the bears to unsecured backyard attractants such as garbage, fruit, bird seed and pet food.
The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter, a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Smithers, received 35 orphaned bear cubs in 2010, 14 of which came from the Prince George area. This is the highest number of cubs they have ever had come through their doors in 20 years of operation.
