2010 Deadly Year for Bears in P.G.

Prince George, B.C. – Northern Bear Awareness says 2010 was a difficult one for bears in Prince George.

The Conservation Officer Service received over 1900 complaints from Prince George residents in 2010 from March until December. This resulted in the destruction of 87 bears in our city (1 grizzly bear and 86 black bears), nearly twice the annual average in the last ten years. Prince George consistently destroys more bears than any other city each year in British Columbia.

The high number of complaints is attributed to the poor food year for the bears, with a hot summer which dried up the majority of the natural food crops such as berries. This forced many animals to wander into the city in search of sustenance, leading the bears to unsecured backyard attractants such as garbage, fruit, bird seed and pet food.

The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter, a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Smithers, received 35 orphaned bear cubs in 2010, 14 of which came from the Prince George area. This is the highest number of cubs they have ever had come through their doors in 20 years of operation.

Its funny watching corrupt, stupid biologists attempt to force nature to conform with their beliefs, only to have everything blow up in their face. A rational person would say bear populations are far too high. A BC biologist blames humans (because we are all just horrible parasites) and bemoans the destruction of a few starving, diseased, problem bears even though culling them was the logical, merciful solution. Nobody misses those bears.
I, for one, miss those bears. If you (being Gamblor) think that all the bears they destroy are diseased, you are mistaken.

This is their land too and most times they pass through without harming anyone. Hello people, we live in bear country. Outdoor attractants can be pretty much eliminated. I wish people would stop leaving their garbage out overnight, pick the fruit from their trees and put away the bird feeder for a couple of months. Most of all, I wish people would stop calling the conversation officers and RCMP when a bear passes through their neighborhood.

We need City Hall to act on this horrible waste of bears' lives. I think there should be penalties for leaving out bear attractants in the fall, and, possibly a fine for those people who call the CO's and RCMP when a bear is doing no harm.
i think Mayor McDan should tax those bears for living in the City.
How come moose are not taken out? Over the years there have been moose attacks but does anyone have information on any bear attacks?
If you miss your Bears so much come outwest and pick up a few to replenish the once you have lost, makes me feel safer if you take a few, we have Blacks and Grizzly they are all yours if you want them. You have to bring your own Bear Attractants and Transport to take them to your Home, please wait for Spring they are sleeping now.
I think we should stop killing millions of turkeys, geese, chickens, pigs, cows, etc; just so that we can sit down at the table and eat them.

These animals should be allowed to roam throught the City at will. Much like the sacred cows of India. We could live off of vegtables, fruit etc;.

Can you imagine anything worse that pulling a beautiful salmon out of the river, cutting its throat, slitting its guts out, and then throwing it in a 350 degrees oven, and then eating it.

There was a time when people ate bears also, however seems they dont do that anymore.
Lots of people eat bear. It's good.
It is quite unfortunate that many bears are being shot unnecessary due to the laziness and ignorance of the human population. If people would put their garbage out the morning of instead of the night before and pick their fruit trees instead of letting the fruit ripen and fall to the ground there would be a few more bears around today. These are a couple ideas that are easy to follow.

It also doesn't help that we got the gun happy conservation officer that Whistler chased out of their area.
Well said unbelievable
There is a lot of very ignorance out there.
It's puzzling that urban dwellers believe they can simply kill any creature that happens to come into conflict with where they decide to live. The bears and other animals that we drive off of 'our' lands have been there for centuries and have well earned their right to be there.

Unbelievable is correct that the ignorance of humans not controlling their own wastes is simply baiting the animals to their deaths. Laws exist to address such ignorance and I for one support those charges.

We happen to live in the middle of nowhere with bears strolling through the property about 100 meters from the house all summer long. We don't shoot them because if they come too close to the house we tell them to go away (yelling, dogs banging things). They're not stupid animals. tell them they're not wanted and they bugger off.

Why do urban folks need to bait and kill; bait and kill. They're putting their own safety and that of their families in jeopardy by doing so.

And Palopu's right. why not stop killing everything. We did.

Alright tree huggers - here is the new plan. Fire all of the CO's and put your garbage out the night before because heaven forbid you have to get up early to do it in the morning. Please leave your trees and berry bushes untended as that too is a lot of work. This will help save an exploding bear population.
PS - once they are out of garbage and fruit and no longer afraid of humans, please don't complain when your dog or kid gets mauled - its their territory remember?
I was being facitious.
Those bears should learn that this isn't their land -- it's ours. We have a season to kill those damn pests and any that encroach on our space should be culled. If more of that was practiced, we wouldn't have any bear problems in the city and hunting would be a lot more productive outside the city. None of you so called educated bear huggers have ever read anything on animal control and declining species in regards to hunting. Check Oregon and how they cured thier cougar problems. Don't forget to read the part about the rising number of cougars since they opened a hunting season.

Supertech is superstupid!! Yes let's teach the bears a lesson, because they are such good students. Seriously!!!!!
