There were a number of people who expressed concern last week at what would happen in the event Transat holidays pulls the pin on international holidays out of Prince George.
As it now stands, we have our own customs clearing operated by one local customs officer who receives part time help from a former customs agent .
It’s a great fix; we can travel from this city to Mexico without that trip to Vancouver and overnight before boarding our flight.
It has effectively cut two days off of travel and the comment that you are better to take the plane out of Seattle or Vancouver just doesn’t hold water.
At present we are using either Seattle or Vancouver for 1/3 of our travel and if we could change that, we could be in the position of Kelowna where they have non- stop flights to Toronto.
Business goes where it is the easiest to travel and that flight will mean big dollars for that city.
According to some of the airport insiders, we may lose Transat, but as Sue Armstrong of Uniglobe travel says, we could every well end up with other tour operators wanting to use PG as their base.
The key in all this is the demand. No demand, no program.
The biggest piece of pie however could come if we could convince as little as 2% of the Asian flights that land in Alaska, to use OUR city as their fuelling stopover or distribution point.
Rather than heading off to the Olympics, we could have used that $38 thousand to bring a few of the major players in the trade like DHL (express delivery system) here to talk business. No, not us, we sent a contingent, with no business people on board, off to Torino to try and drum up...business. Ask anyone who runs a business and they will tell you, they know the chances of getting something out of the games are very very slim.
We do have a chance of having real golden goose in the form of the Prince George Airport. Those who see the potential should be given the necessary support to make it fly.
I’m Meisner and that is one man’s opinion.
