Prince George, B.C. -  Although the snowfall has eased to just a few flakes this hour, the City has decided to schedule an evening shift for snow removal crews in a bid to stay on top of what could be a weekend whiteout.

The City's Supervisor of Fleet Services, Mick Jones, says, "We try not to base too much on forecasts because they change frequently, so we do try to react based on what's actually on the ground."  However, with approximately five-centimetres falling over the course of the morning and early afternoon, Jones says crews will be out tonight so as not to fall too far behind, should the weekend forecast hold true.

Environment Canada is calling for between 5-10cm tomorrow and a further 10cm on Sunday.  It took City staff and contracted crews five days to fully clean-up after last week's two big dumps, but, fortunately, they came during the week.  "If snow happens during the week, we're set, because we have City staff on days, afternoons and nights," says the supervisor.  "Basically, the only time we don't have any scheduled coverage is roughly from 11pm Saturday night until 11pm Sunday night."

"Anytime during the week, we're set, we have our fleet ready to go -- they're out there making sure the streets are safe, sanded, and accessible for everybody. And if we get more snow (then) it's just a matter of increasing the amount of contracted equipment."

Jones says, "The weekend is tougher, basically, just because we don't have as much staff scheduled, so then it's extra work, it's overtime, it's a call."  He says a decision will be made tomorrow about bringing in a day shift on Sunday.

"in a bid to stay on top of"

ROTFLMAO!!! Let us know when you are even halfway close to being on top of it.
Time and a half or double time? Triple time after 8 hours? Could happen. Talk about "being on top" of anything.
Would you rather they wait until Monday to clear the snow that will fall tonight and all weekend?
Keep up the good work!
As a PG taxpayer, to please some people I will just say. "Put that on my tab, pal". Sure hope that doesn't upset any one else.
that would be 6 city workers working and watching 1 plow!!
lol this city is a joke when it comes to snow removal
A lot of sarcasm here, for sure. Snow removal is an expensive proposition and we pay our taxes to get it done as efficently and swiftly as possible.

When they do the job properly I appreciate the effort. Usually they get it done and it makes a difference when one lives on a bus route. The side streets have a lower priority but even they get done eventually. I have seen worse in other towns!

I don't think this city is a joke when it comes to snow removal.
I will admit that this year the city has been doing a fairly good job. They cleared the snow from our neighbourhood twice prior to new years and really did a great job.

Let's not forget that most of us expect great service, but not to many people realize how expensive this service is. How much do you think a snow blow is? How much is a grader, how much do the workers cost per hour. Fuel, insurance, garages to do maintenance and store the equipment. The list goes on and on.

How much per year do we pay in property taxes....I know everyone complains that it's so high. But really, I think every day about all the services and I still think it's a great deal. Let's look at the glass half full not half empty.
I wonder if they ever heard of staggering shifts... whats wrong with some employees having a Tuesday or Wednesday Thursday off or something similar? Why the bankers hours for an essential service?

All this talk of overtime to work weekends is a clear signal that city hall is drunk on tax payer dollars union or not.
Just wait, by next Friday there should be an accumulation of two feet of fresh snow.
My question is when did they stop the nightshift? I rarely see any city snow removal during the day except for residential streets. Or there is still the nightshift and they are going to run an afternoon shift?

Well our taxes keep going up so if they run extra overtime crews atleast we know where some of the money is going.

With times the way they are maybe the city should consider contracting out the snow removal and then we can blame the contractor instead of the city.
I agree with mwk. There is a lot more to snow removal than most people realize. Personally I am happy to have experienced workers out there that know what they are doing.
And don't we all think we could do better????
If you don't have anything to compare to, it is hard to say whether it is good or not.
