Prince George, B.C. -  The forecast snowstorm did, in fact, move in overnight, burying the city of Prince George in a thick blanket of snow...

The City's snow removal crews are out in force, but it's an impossible task to try and keep up with Mother Nature this morning.

Many of the main routes are treacherous with snowdrifts causing vehicles to catch and pull.

Just one lane on Foothills Boulevard has been plowed this morning and the snow is definitely creating squalls behind vehicles as they make their way down the road. (As seen in photo at right)

So far, though, RCMP are not reporting any major incidents from overnight.

Private contractors were out very early this morning in what may be a futile effort to keep business parking lots clear today.

(Photo at left shows Bobcat at work in the Tim Horton's Parking lot on 15th Avenue)

The snowfall warning issued yesterday by Environment Canada continues with between 10- and 15-centimetres to fall today, another 5-centimetres forecast for overnight, and snow into tomorrow morning.

In addition, the wind is expected to pick up this afternoon creating a windchill factor - while the temperature is to hold steady at minus-18, it will feel like minus-27 this afternoon, so there is the risk of frostbite.

Tomorrow, with the wind chill, the temperature will feel like minus-30.  We can expect a bit of reprieve on Tuesday, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of minus-5, before the snow returns on Wednesday.

Waking up to this morning's large dump did not deter die-hard hockey players and their parents from making their way to the Kin Arenas for early morning practise.

"The City's snow removal crews are out in force, but it's an impossible task to try and keep up with Mother Nature this morning."

Interesting quote, I was out late last night and up early this morning and I didnt see one grader or plow anywhere on the highways or ospika, university blvd etc. I did on friday night see our city crews "working" all night but it didn't look like much was being accomplished.

Keep raising our taxes PG.
This will be a good test to see just how well we can respond to a serious snow condition.

Problem is, every since we expanded the City to a 10 mile radius we have a huge problem with snow removal. The inability to get around costs business a lot of money, that includes the Casino which seems to have a lot less cars in their parking lot these days.

The snow situation is bad for seniors who cant get out, or who insist on shoveling to the detriment of their health.

Lets see how the City handles this one.
Great story Opinion250. You guys are always on top of things asap. Thats what I love so much about you guys. Might sound cheezy, just some story about another snowfall, but I have lots of PG friends and family that live out of town, and they love checking O250 everyday to catch the latest news. Keep up the great work.

p.s. when you going to get a good mobile site/app for my iPhone?
"the Casino which seems to have a lot less cars in their parking lot these days."

New Year's resolutions ....... they will fill up again slowly within a couple of months ........ ;-)

I think snow in PG typically falls at relatively small rates per hour over a longer period of time. During Christmas week the landscaspe lights in our backyard were sitting in snow that had melted down to about 10cm depth.

Then the snows came, a little at a time.

Mid last week they were covered to full depth of 30cm, now they are just dimples and there is probably close to 50cm out there.

The prediction is for more in the next couple of days with above 0C temps by Thursday along with 15cm of wet snow and then rain .....

If the prediction comes true, we will have almost 2 weeks of above freezing temps.
My street was being poorly plowed although the grader did a wonderful job, the young lad on the loader was very lazy (or blind. I phoned the city. Totally rehearsed response! The fourth person in my block to do so, I was told "Gee, You're the first complaint we've had this winter!" Have you ever returned an item to a complaints dept. to see 10 or twenty of the same item on the shelf behind the desk and the clerk tells you: "we've never had one come back thus far!" Dan Rogers was a huge mistake! We should stop paying our heavy taxes . Our homes are low value in PG yet we pay more taxes then Abbotsford!
Oh it is going to warm up I see. Yuck be a real mess.
The same thing happens with other types of complaints western2. Many complaints against the same person/business are simply ignored even when it's very obvious our bylaws are being broken.
shovel shovel shovel thats why they invented hot tubs and beer:)
did it ever!!
cops and city workers hang out at tims
In all the Cities we have lived in it was up to the property owner to clean out their driveway after the snowplow went by. And that included business properties . If there was aside walk the owner cleaned it. Not in PG.

Get out your shovels and get some exercise. Harold Moffets philosophy on snow removal was,”it will all go away in the spring”.

And Palopu don’t worry about us old guys. Some of us have seen a seen a 36 inch snowfall in 48 hours. Move to Fernie and see how they handle snow cleanup. Don’t forget the next time that you support a public vote, do some legwork and make house calls . The result should be more then 2%.
Cheers
sooooooo much bitching and moaning......blah blah blah.....Godddddd!!! Get over it people. The best comment on here is from Brownshoe. Hot tubs and beer. it's life, we live in the North, it snows, get over it or leave. Shovel it, snowblow it and go inside and have a beer and watch some football. Sounds easy enough. Now if you'll excuse me, the games back on. Carry on....
If you are really a community minded person, now is the time for a random act of kindness with nothing other than a snow shovel.
Quit yapping and start shovelling; it is less than 60 days until we can see the shoulders of spring.
If this were Toronto the city would have all five plows out, the PR boys would be in full flight, there would be a request for military aid and a disaster would be declared. Oh yes, the media would have a ball. One of the reasons I like PG is that you can always tell what season it is. A little exercise clearing your driveway is in most cases a good thing.
I had a friend mumblimg about the lack of snow before Christmas. I said not to wrry, once Christmas comes it will start snowing and won't stop - lol. Two things you can count on in PG - snowfall and palupo complaining ;-)
I was out this morning and the only road i found that had been plowed was the bypass...nothing else until around 11AM...so yes, they were really working hard this morning....what a bunch... unless they were clearing little back streets,I doubt they were out until at least 10AM...
I am glad my little car has good tires..I got around fine... but could have gladly run that 4x4 off the road that kept tailgating me down 5th avenue at around 8 AM however.
tims drive thru gets plowed first
This isn't snow. Try Stewart for snow, tunnels to the front door, but they've got great snow removal, but 6 inch flakes, man, does is ever snow.
"The City's snow removal crews are out in force, but it's an impossible task to try and keep up with Mother Nature this morning."

The city was not out that is a outright lie we drove around in the snow just to see what the city was doing and we didn't find anything moving we also checked at city yards and it was quiet. The only roads open were done by YRB. The taxes we are paying in this city that have had a increase for the past 10 years at least are not doing what tax dollars are meant for. There are to many long time people on council we need some changes . The sooner the better. The city didn't say they were working 250 news said it... must be another type error
Bring on more snow!! It's so crisp and refreshing out there today!

I love it as well verballabel. No more -40 temps these days. Hope the sun will be out as predicted tomorrow. Should be really nice for some winter scenery photos if it does.

With warmer weather on the way, the icicles will be blossoming with the deeper snow on the roofs.
Carefull Gus - icicles mean heat loss, soon we will have an icicle tax. $10 per inch of ice?
lol
ps - Im joking, please dont confuse me with the perpetual whiners...
Bring on the snow!
woohoo
This is nothing. If we ever get as much snow as we did in the early seventies, this would be a mess and no one would go anywhere. I remember shovelling 3 times every day just to make my driveway passable for a 4X4. I also remember you couldn't see the house numbers from the street because the snow was piled so high. In the trailer areas of the Hart, you couldn't see the trailers. It was like driving in tunnels. Brace yourself, just in case it happens again.
i hope are mayor reads the coments as his job will be gone the next election, it is a crime that he trys to be a big city mayor you are failing badly! snow removal is number one in a city like prince geoge, but you would sooner take a trip somewhere on tax payers.keep up the good work you digging your own grave.
