Digging Out

A city resident uses his snow blower to dig out along 15th Avenue

Prince George, B.C. -  Many city residents wasted no time in beginning the task of digging out from the dump of snow that started overnight and continued throughout the day...

City snow removal crews have also been hard at work with what seems to be an almost impossible task.  A drive through the city this afternoon found a patchwork of conditions, depending on whether plows had been through the area.

The City's Supervisor of Fleet Operations, Mick Jones, says a full complement of city crews and contracted equipment -- 50 pieces of equipment in total -- will be out this evening.  Jones says they'll be moving in to clear out the downtown core and continue working away at the number one and two priority roads.

He expects work on those high priority routes will continue through tomorrow, and is hopeful plows will then begin moving into residential areas tomorrow, as well.  He says, as snow removal tries to clear the way for the city's garbage trucks, residents living in the green zone should start seeing some equipment move in tomorrow in advance of garbage pick-up on Tuesday.

Jones says crews are doing their best to make travel within the city as safe as possible.

Photo at right shows at least one vehicle that decided to 'give up' rather than make its way through all this snow.  The vehicle was in the process of being loaded onto a tow truck at the intersection of Highway 16 and Ferry Avenue.

Calls to several local towing companies rang busy this afternoon, and when Opinion250 did get through to the answering services, messages put out were not returned on what looked to be an extremely busy day.

Meantime, contract crews are everywhere, in an effort to get school and business parking lots dug out before the start of the work/school week tomorrow.

Environment Canada has removed its snowfall warning for the region, but is still forecasting another 5-centimetres overnight with some snow through tomorrow morning...meaning the digging out is not done.

DO WE HAVE TO WAIT TILL IT QUITES SNOWING BEFORE, WE CLEAR THE ROADS?I WENT ON TO 15 TH AVE IT HAD NOT SEEN A SNOW PLOW IT WAS ALLMOST IMPASSABLE, REALLY PRINCE GEORGE WE ARE ABIG CITY , DO WE HAVE TO BE CONSIDER STILL A HICK TOWN?
lynne, do you really expect the city to be able to clean all the streets at the same time? Or just the ones you drive on?
15th may not have been plowed- Ospika, Tabor, Victoria, Queensway and lots of others were.
I hope the crews can get 'er done before Thursday as that's when it's predicted to go above freezing and to start raining.

Won't that be a fine mess?
I don't know about Tabor and Ospika but Victoria, and Queensway definitely were not plowed by 3:00 P.M. Neither was Winnipeg/Massey. Even First ave. was down to one lane each way, except for where YRB did it.
Oh. sorry, I meant by 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
Domano is sort of plowed in spots, but is really only safe to use as a single lane in each direction. Why the goof in the white company truck C/W canopy this morning thought he could do 90 and try to use it like it was two lanes is beyond me. He was tailgating, less than 1 vehicle length behind me. He almost ate my bumper :-) I was already doing 55 yet he kept trying to pass me. All the way down Ospika he was driving like a complete idiot. Maybe I will get the company name next time.
You business owners need to remind your employees driving your vehicles not to drive like a bunch of morons. It's not good for business.
Give more...on the way home from Tim's at 3 PM Sunday I couldn't help but notice Massey, Westwood and Ferry Ave. were not plowed. Call me spoiled.
