Terrace, B.C. –Terrace RCMP have released more information about a fire that claimed two lives in the community Saturday morning.
Investigators say the likely cause of the blaze that ripped through the home was careless use of smoking materials. The RCMP say there was no foul play involved and the official cause of the blaze will be ruled undetermined.
The Terrace Fire Department is urging families to make sure their smoke detectors are working and to sleep with their bedroom doors closed. Officials say sleeping behind a closed door will give you more time to wake up and get out of the house if there’s a fire and it can help diminish the toxic levels of carbon monoxide from entering the room while you sleep.
Fire crews found one male victim unconscious in a bedroom when they got to the building Saturday morning. The second victim was discovered in another room once the fire was extinguished.
The names of the two males will not be released out of respect for the families.
The Coroners Service is taking over the investigation.
