By 250 News
Prince George, B.C. - Tumbler Ridge has become the holder of the 41st community forest licence in the Province.
Forests, Mines and Lands Minister Pat Bell announced today that a community forest agreement for the District of Tumbler
Ridge will generate additional revenue for the municipality and create a more secure fibre supply for sawmills in northeastern B.C.
"Tumbler Ridge has shown a keen interest in diversifying its economic base with a community forest agreement," said Bell. "This agreement gives Tumbler Ridge a larger role in how local forest resources are managed to address community needs and priorities."
The community forest agreement is for a 25-year term and grants the right to harvest 20,000 cubic metres of timber per year from about 22,000 hectares of Crown land in the Dawson Creek timber supply area. The community forest consists of three separate parcels within 25 kilometres of Tumbler Ridge's municipal boundaries.
The number of Community Forests in the Province has grown from 1 in 2001, to this, the 41st. There are 14 more under offer for a total of a potential 55 Community Forests.
