Prince George, B.C.-  It's official,  the nomination  period for the Prince George -Peace  River  Conservative  Party is open.

Those who have already anounced they are in the race, got phone calls earlier this evening advising that the nomination period is now open and will close  February 14th.

That means, anyone interested in  running for the candidacy  has until February 14th to file their papers,  and  that is also the closing date for  new memberships to  be eligible to  vote  for a  candidate.

Once the nomination period  closes, the  "campaign"  officially begins, and for  21 days,  candidates  will be pushing their profiles in an effort to  win the favour of party members and be selected as the candidate to represent the party in either a by-election or a federal election.  That means the vote to select a candidate will  take place March 7th.  How the vote will be conducted has not been released.

There are , so far,  6 people seeking the nomination:

  • P.G. City Councillor Cameron Stolz,
  • Former P.G. Mayor Colin Kinsley,
  • Fort St. John City Councillors Dan Davies and Don Irwin,
  • Teacher Bob Zimmer, and
  • Tumbler Ridge Councillor Jerrilyn Schembri,

The candidacy  came open with the retirement of Jay Hill last fall .

While there has been no date  set for a  federal  by-election,  the  Federal Government has six months from the date of Jay Hill's retirement ( October  25th, 2010)  to either call a by-election or hold a full national election.  So with the  timing of the nomination  vote,we may see a ballot of one type or the other,  in  April.

The Federal New Democrats  have selected Lois Boone as their candidate, and the Green Party has  selected Hilary Crowley.
