Prince George, B.C. – School District 57 has made changes to it’s policy about school catchment areas and student transfers. The changes will give preference to siblings who want to attend the same schools.
At its meeting last night, the Board of Education approved changes which Chair Lyn Hall says will give sibling preference a priority when registering for regular and choice programs.
““The Board of Education values keeping family members together in the same school if at all possible; hence, the move to sibling recognition. The recognition of siblings means that if there are more students than can be accommodated in a program, registrations will be accepted in the following descending order of priority: siblings first, school district child second and non-school district child third” says Hall.
The district will now recognize two types of catchment areas: the catchment area for a regular program, which is a geographic attendance area identified by the Board, and the catchment area for a choice program or school, which encompasses the entire school district.
“Parents are now required to register Kindergarten children in the regular program offered in their catchment area school in which they live or at a choice program school: Aboriginal, French Immersion, Montessori, or Traditional”, said Hall. “Parents who want their children to attend a regular program at a school other than the one serving their catchment area are required to apply through the district’s on-line transfer process.”
Kindergarten registration will take place on February 2, 2011. The on-line student transfer process begins at 9:00 a.m. on February 7, 2011.

We have chosen to not put our child into all day kindergarten as we do not believe it is in his best interest.
Will our sibling preference be jeopardized when we register for Grade 1?
The following has nothing to do with our choice for the above - - but it irks me that all day kindergarten came about because of reverse disdrimination protest over the introduction of all day kindergarten for aboriginal children - but not offered to 'non aboriginal' children at that time.
