Terrace, B.C. – The Ministry of Transportation has reopened Highway 16 between Terrace and Prince Rupert. The road opened shortly before 2 p.m.

Area Highways Manager Don Ramsay says avalanche technicians were able to conduct helicopter bombing operations in problem areas along the corridor earlier today. Ramsay says two sites were given attention to created controlled avalanches.

While the highway is now open, officials caution that the heavy precipitation has created plenty of water pooling on the road along with slushy sections. Motorists are urged to drive with caution. Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the Terrace area today.

Ramsay says avalanche technicians are now turning their attention to the access road to Shames Mountain Ski Hill which was also closed because of the high risk of slides.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre forecast says the avalanche risk in the Terrace and coastal sections is extreme.

I spent the night on Shames Mountain because of an avalanche. 380 people, 1 building, 0 beds, it was not fun.
