Prince George, B.C. – The Cohen Commission on the decline of Sockeye in the Fraser River has been granted an extension to complete its work.

The Commission’s Terms of Reference are now revised to call for a final report to be submitted on or before June 30, 2012.  The initial terms of reference called for a final report  to be delivered by May 1st of this year.

Due to the complexity of the topic at hand, a difficult and time-consuming document disclosure process, the large number of participants in the inquiry, and a comprehensive evidentiary hearings schedule, Commissioner Bruce Cohen requested the extension to ensure he could properly fulfill his mandate.

The Commission heard from 600 participants in the community forums which took place last fall,  and participants  have delivered some 3600 documents for consideration.

Evidentiary hearings are underway now in Vancouver and hearings are now expected to run to early fall.

What Cohen is really saying is that they need time to finess this,so nobody comes out looking like the bad guy.
Particularly the Federal Fisheries, native fisheries, and the B.C. government.
This ain't rocket science.
More politically driven bullsh**t that will accomplish nothing.
Except suck more money out of the public tax trough.
There won't be any fish left by the time this thing's done.
These things always become an industry for lawyers and assorted hacks....similar to the treaty process that grinds on and on without much effect, all financed by the dutiful taxpayer.
Until we drop the current funding and peer-approval based system in our wildlife management departments and adopt a science based system that values ecosystem quality over pure preservation, there will be no improvement with salmon or anything else and only damage and degradation. And I'm not talking about Al Gore type rubbish "science".
