"It is just a start" those are the words of Bryna Willey reacting to a report that recommends police officers only use the taser when they face grievous bodyily harm, and the "electric stun gun" as it is known ,should not be used against people who display only passive resistance.
Brynna is the sister of Clayton Willey, he died after being tasered by arresting police officers in Prince George. She says "It may be alright that a bunch of police officers have taken a taser just to see what kind of harm it does, its a far cry from dealing with my brother who was given two taser shots at exactly the same time, putting twice as much electricity through his body as is normally administered."
The report ,she says, doesn’t bring Clayton back and the police have never looked at the matter of people being tasered who have, for example, a heart condition or perhaps epilepsy. “There plain and simply should have been more research." she says. The Medical Review Panel which prepared the report, looked at the current scientific research into the deaths of four people in this province.
In North America, fifty people have died after being tasered.
In the USA , tasers are legal in most States, cities and towns. The U.S. maker of the device says so far, no autopsy report has concluded that a taser has caused a death.
It has long been Brynna Willey's belief that Clayton Willey died while in police custody as a result of the number of times he was tasered.
Police have been given instructions that they not to make a comment in the matter. They say 4,000 lives have been saved since police forces have been able to use tasers in Canada.
