The Keg Restaurant on 5th Avenue, behind construction fencing

Prince George, B.C.-  Prince George City Council has paved the way for an outdoor patio in front of The Keg restaurant on George Street.

The restaurant closed its doors last summer to undergo major renovations.  It was scheduled to re-open this past November, but a sign on the construction fencing announces the planned re-opening for fall of this year.

At last night's meeting, councillors gave first two readings to the road closure bylaw that will allow the patio to take up 113-metres2 of roadway in front of the restaurant at 582 George Street.

Real estate services has approved the sale of that portion of the street for $18-thousand dollars, plus HST and The Keg has agreed to re-locate the existing sidewalk around the new patio.  In a report to council, the department says the bylaw meets several objectives in the City's Strategic Plan, including: creating a better downtown and strengthening and diversifying our economy.

The bylaw wil be back to council for third and final reading, it does not require a public hearing.

Wow, 14 months to complete the project. Hmmmm, Took WIC, 18 months to build Duchess????
An outdoor patio right next to a downtown street with all the bums walking by? No thanks I'll eat elsewhere.
Love the idea of an outdoor patio!
I agree Imorge!
Tried that in downtown Vancouver at a sidewalk cafe...big mistake!
I do have to wonder why is this reno project taking so long?
Because they first had to reno the ideas they had ......

that is what happens when the architect creates drawings on the back of a napkin while in flight ......
Lots of outdoor patios in Kelowna ... also many more bums in Kelowna...... I had one that probably had a sense of humour when he approached me .... he asked for 17 cents .... LOL
I remember sitting in Gastown some years ago. Fellow came by and offered to do a sketch portrait for a couple of dollars. I thought why not ... he did a quick few cartoon-like strokes ... looked somewhat interesting .....

all part of the "downtown" experience" in any city in the world .....

I am sure that is not what the powers that be are thinking of here ..... they are thinking more like the hermetically sealed streetscape environments of a Las Vagas hotel with private security.
Oh no! They are going to ruin the downtown. No where will I go to spend money?
Good idea, but bad location... its in the shade most of the day from the big hill to the south....
They should scrap the whole reno thing and move away from downtown. I know move it out to the Hart. College heights is full.
It is taking a long time because the city held back the permit until he agreed to certain items that were not really his responsibility. Period.
I've eaten on outdoor patios in Vancouver, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa and Miami. I recall seeing "street people" or "shady characters" in all locales except Ottawa and Quebec City. Didn't really impact my meal, nor did the hundreds of other people around seem to care. I therefore arrive at two possible conclusions:

1) The more people you have around, the less of an issue it becomes (doesn't seem to stand out as much) and
2) People in PG will complain about things that everyone else seems to not care about
I have spent many a late afternoon (Pre PG HO shutdown) or early evening on the outdoor terrrace??? at the Duck and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance.....it was memorable. I look forward to the Keg this fall and spend my money there.....!!!
The Keg has to do something to compete with Ric's, give them a break, Ric's will just carry on producing great meals and ambience, for a reasonable buck. I never gor ripped off at Ric's....
metalman.
White Spot had an outdoor patio for a while. It's not there anymore. Maybe it had something to do with the no idle zone across from the Civic centre that stopped in the middle of Brunswick St. And maybe the customers who did use White Spots patio remarked that the emitted CO from idling cars waiting for their turn at Tims window kinda interfered with their hamburgers triple-O sauce. What a town, eh?
