Prince George, B.C. - The deadline to become a member of the Federal Conservative Party is fast approaching...

Those interested in joining the party in time to be able to cast a ballot for the leadership candidate in the as-of-yet unannounced byelection for the Prince George-Peace River riding have until 5pm this afternoon to sign up.

Only registered members will be eligible to cast ballots for one of the six candidates hoping to represent the party and, ideally, continue the Conservative lock on the riding that was held by long-time MP Jay Hill until he stepped down on October 25th.  The candidates are:

  • Fort St. John Councillor Dan Davies
  • Fort St. John Councillor Don Irwin
  • Former Prince George Mayor Colin Kinsley
  • Tumbler Ridge District Councillor Jerrilyn Schembri
  • Prince George City Councillor Cameron Stolz, and
  • Fort St. John teacher Bob Zimmer

Voting will take place over the week of March 7-11.  Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has so far refused to call a byelection for the riding, but one must be held within 180-days of the Speaker of the House informing the Chief Electoral Officer of the vacancy...meaning it must be held around the last week of April.

"Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, has so far refused to call a byelection for the riding"

Has he actually refused or has he just not called one? There is a difference.

Whose request to have one has he refused? It would be intersting if he refused the request of the rieding association.
