Prince George, B.C. - Four Prince George athletes are in medal contention as the final day of week one competition wraps up at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax...
15-year-old Joshua Connolly of the Cariboo Cougars will be playing in hockey's gold medal game. After falling 5-1 to Ontario in the round robin, Team BC came out with a solid 5-2 victory in yesterday's semi-final.
BC faces Quebec in the final which starts at 3:30pm pacific.
Also going for gold will be local biathlete Sarah Beaudry and her BC teammates in the 3x6km Relay. The 16-year-old member of the Caledonia Nordic Ski club is already coming home with a gold in the 7.5km Sprint and a bronze in the 12.5km Individual.
Club members, Aaron Neumann and Arthur Roots, will also be hunting for a medal on the men's side, as part of Team BC's 3x7.5km Relay.
As for action yesterday, Prince George Blizzards speed skater, Tim Hempsall, wrapped up his time at the Games with an 8th place finish in the Short Track Super 1500m. The 18-year-old, who now trains at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, competed in a total of five events, with his highest finish a 6th in the 500m.
Team BC ended the Winter Games in 7th spot in wheelchair basketball, after falling 65-52 to Nova Scotia yesterday. Prince George athlete Avril Harris had 18-points in the final game, while Quesnel's Erik Vliegenthart had 13. Harris came in 9th on the High Score List with a total of 113-points. Vliegenthart ended in 15th spot with 85 points.
