The Original KGV Elementary...cause of much recent heritage debate
Today marks the start of B.C. Heritage week -- a time to reflect on our social, historical, and architectural heritage.
And the Huble Homestead Society is inviting the the community to kick-off celebrations with an afternoon of music, weaving, and spinning demonstrations at Art Space, above Books & Co. on Third Avenue, between 1pm and 5pm.
The "Huble Family" will take guests on a visual step back-in-time with a photographic exhibit. There will be a kid's craft corner and tasty treats straight out of the Huble Cookbook to snack on. A preview will also be offered up of events this coming season at the Homestead.
Three buildings at the historic Huble site are the only structures recognized as "heritage" by the Fraser-Fort George Regional District. In addition, the Giscome Portage is one of just two heritages within the Regional District recognized by the province.
Tomorrow marks National Heritage Day. (click here, for more information) And, fittingly enough, a public consultation on the a draft Strategic Heritage Plan for Prince George will be held on Tuesday of this week, from 7pm to 9pm, upstairs in the Civic Centre. (click here, for more information)
The heritage issue has been a hot topic in our city since this past July, when the City's Heritage Commission raised the red flag over School District 57's plans to demolish the former KGV Elementary School as it prepared to build a replacement for Duchess Park Secondary. City Council did not grant the building heritage status and SD57 is moving ahead with demolition plans. A local couple is still hoping to save the building from the wrecking ball by moving it to their private property near the Hudson's Bay slough. (for previous story, click here)
