The Everett Silvertips got the upper hand on their weekend visit to Prince George, skating away with a 4-1 victory at CN Centre Friday over the Cougars.
Friday's showdown was the second of four between the Cougars and Silvertips, with Everett taking the first encounter in Everett 4-2 on January 29. The Cougars came into the game four points ahead of the Silvertips for sixth in the Western Conference and winners of three straight at CN Centre, while the Silvertips had lost three in a row. The Cougars came flying out of the gates Friday, when Sena Acolatse jumped off the bench and joined the play in the Silvertips zone. Troy Bourke passed to Taylor Stefishen behind the goal line who then worked the puck in front for Acolatse who slid the puck past Kent Simpson for a 1-0 Cougars lead just 52 seconds into the game. But the Silvertips responded on a goal from Prince George product Jari Erricson, who snapped a shot past traffic and Ty Rimmer at 10:11 to tie the game at 1. Former Cougar Parker Stanfield drew a helper on the goal. The Silvertips had five power plays in the first period, but the Cougars killed all five, including a 21 second 5-on-3 advantage as the teams went to the dressing room tied at one.
The Silvertips out-shot the Cougars 11-3 in the first and the Cougars returned the favour in the second period, out-shooting the Silvertips 11-2, but the teams were still tied at one through 40 minutes. In the third, the Cougars kept the heat on to start the frame, but could not get the go-ahead goal on Simpson. At 8:06, Scott MacDonald provided the go-ahead goal for Everett, coming around the Cougars net and banking a shot off Brock Hirsche past Rimmer to put Everett in the lead at 2-1. Ryan Harrison scored a power play goal at 16:37 for a 3-1 Everett lead and MacDonald scored his second goal of the game into an empty net for a 4-1 Silvertips win. The Cougars out-shot the Silvertips 16-9 in the third and 30-22 in the game, but fall to 28-27-2-1, now just two points clear of the Silvertips, who are 24-28-5-4. The Silvertips went 1-for-7 on the power play, the first power play goal allowed by the Cougars in February, while the Cougars were 0-for-5.
The Cougars meet the Silvertips again Saturday, with puck drop at 7:00pm at CN Centre. Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at 250-564-5585.
