A Dumpster-Free Downtown?
By 250 News
Downtown Prince George is looking into the feasibility of removing dumpsters from the city's core...
Similar programs are in place in Seattle, San Francisco, and Portland and have been very successful in creating a cleaner, friendlier environment. The idea being that the move would leave the downtown devoid of any waste and many of the unpleasant activities associated with dumpsters in alleyways.
The program's goals would be to encourage pedestrian traffic in the alleys, as well as provide opportunities for businesses to develop the back entrances to their shops.
The City of Kelowna is also, apparently, considering a bid to remove garbage bins.
Locally, the project is one of 11 under development by Downtown Prince George, as released earlier this month in its 2005 Annual Report. The group is looking for city residents' feedback on this idea and the others. To offer up your thoughts, click here.
