Prince George, B.C.- The new Duchess Park Secondary School   has been entered  in a competition for architectural recognition with World Architecture News (WAN).

The U.K. based company is awarding architects for their design in a variety of categories, and Duchess Park has been entered in the Education Sector. While the real prize is bragging rights, the winner of the category will also receive a certificate, special feature in a World Architecture News Review a publicity package and media coverage. That all spells good news for the architects who created the winning design.

This is not the only competition the designers of the Duchess Park School will enter. “We are very proud of this project” says architect Karen Marler of Hughes Condon Marler Architects of Vancouver, which designed the new school. Marler says this project “Is an excellent example of the collaboration between the contractor and the designers.”

The World Architecture News entries  will be judged on a variety of points from form and design to how the design improves the educational process.   The deadline for entries is next Monday, following  that, there will be a long list of 25 that will then be whittled down to the top six finalists. Duchess Park is up against educational facilities from all over the world, including entries from Austria, Tasmania, and Southern Australia.

Marler says the Duchess Park school design will also be entered in the B.C. Wood Awards which celebrates design that showcase wood.   And then there is the Canada Design, Build Awards which will also see an entry about the new Duchess Park School.

Way to go WIC
Small price to pay, just shut down a bunch of schools to afford this big heap. Yep, the school board gets the award for shortsightedness
It is too bad that the engineer on the project could not design the solid blue balustrade as a bent beam so that the puny post did not have to be there. It hurts my eyes.
Hey, tractor. We have to start building "prettier" buildings so that the "Heritage Commissions" of 50+ years from now will have more of a fighting chance to keep such buildings around as our legacy of these times of excess. I mean, look at KGV and Lord Byng that used to stand near there. All gone because they were spartan buildings from times of less opulance.... ;-)
He spoke
It's good to give WIC the attention they deserve, I feel the local sub trades that WIC invited in on this project deserve as much attention. Alot of local tradesmen and businesses help to build this great building and I think these people should get a thumbs up also.( I don't want to mention the cancer clinic.)Too bad WIC or IDL could not have gotten more involved in this project. The more this type of money stays in our town the better for all of us.
Gus, there won`t be much of a legacy if we keep living and building beyond our means. Sure, it`s a nice building but, less than a year later all those schools got shut down---Permanently. What about their legacy?
In 50 years they will tare it down like they did the old school and build another prize at great cost.Cheers
Hey Gus; thats a dance class pole.
Ooops. I had not thought about that.

I suppose some of the 9th graders might still be short enough to use it ;-)
Oh no, what do my little eyes spot now? Looks like a real good taping/paint job on the drywall.

Hope that is not one of the pictures entered in the competition. Would WIC really want to be associated with that?
