Prince George, B.C. - Community leaders and business leaders alike are expressing their joy over the Provincial Environmental Assessment approval for the North West Corridor power project.

The proposed $404-million project includes a new 287-kilovolt transmission line, 344-kilometres from the existing Skeena substation south of Terrace to a new substation near Bob Quinn Lake.

The project would include new access roads, an upgrade to the existing Skeena substation and construction of the new Bob Quinn substation, which would incorporate 287-kilovolt line terminations and related equipment.

Byng Giraud, VP of Corporate Affairs for Imperial Metals which  has the Red Chris, gold and Copper project says he is ecstatic and while there remain some minor issues in dealing with First Nations along the highway and right of way, “I am pretty pleased. We have been working on this project since 2007 and to see it come to a conclusion makes me feel good."

The CEO of Initiatives Prince George Tim McEwan says the power grid clears the way for upwards of 15 billion dollars in investment along the power line. Initiatives Prince George is part of the coalition and McEwan says the benefits to this city and region are obvious.

The new line says McEwan will also provide an opportunity for Alaska to use the line to transmit power made in Alaska to south of the 49th parallel. "That also will have positive economic benefit to us as well" he added.

It is the step in the right direction. I believe it is the catalyst to opportunity in the northwest.

I also believe that, companies are not going to invest until we decide which party is going to be in Victoria. Kevin Falcon gets in, we will be busy. If the NDP gets in, we will see great deals on housing in about three years.
Great. One robs you though inflation first, and then taxation. The other robs you through taxation first, and then inflation. And neither one cares if you're really working towards poverty, just so long as you're working. And we wonder why so few people are even bothering to vote.
They should be building a 500 KV line if proposing all that investment.
Taxes pay for all the services we have gotten used to in our modern societies. Without taxes from us working and business activities we would have to go back to living in trees or in caves.

I am against that. I vote and I know who to vote for.

Thanks for your realistic reminder, He spoke!
Another taxpayer subsidy for the mining industry??

I guess its ok if a friend of the liberals builds the line and then sell the power back to the consumer at an exorbitant profit like the run of the river projects.

Cheers

Well, the contractor who builds it risks all that they have to make money, than he should be. He got the job thru competive process, he put in the best proposal in a competitive environment.

That is what free enterprise is all about. Take a few risks, if you do well, than you get rich. If your not willing to take risks, go work for the government or big corporations. Government and big corporations need smaller guys that take risks to keep there expenses in line.

"Friends of the liberals", well, it would be a pretty stupid business person not to be supportive of the Liberal parties!

I heard a rumour that this same line may be used by the Alaskan power companies to sell power to the lower 48.

Great, we British Columbians get paid to transmit power thru our grid system. I don't care where we get our revenues. Just make sure they pay up front before we move the power..... remember Columbia River.
The whole political question is who gets to control the province.

The government or the corporations?

The power from Alaska won't leave the north. Most of it will be used right in BC next to Alaska. It's called a power exchange. Win-win for everybody.
I think Timbo just pulled the 15 bil number out of his butt. Asked when BC Hydro was going to run a desperately needed transmission line through the Robson Valley, they replied "we don't speculate on the future of an area". This sounds like nothing but speculation. Sure, this is great news for the NW - especially when you consider it funnels opportunity AWAY from PG. A Robson Valley transmission line would actually bring benefits here.
I really agree with "He spoke". Right on the button man!
Being billed "friends of the Liberals" or "feeding from the trough " is just a bunch of BS and has no substance.
This is just business and thats how it works.
I guess it's tough for some people to really understand!
Conspiracy theorists, I await your reply!
Funny that all of a sudden this is a big deal. If it is such a great idea, how come they didnt do it 20 years ago. Then all the mines would be operating by now.

Same thing with eliminating the PST . They refused to eliminate it for 20 years saying it was a good tax, and then BANG they say its a bad tax, and needs to be replaced.

Beware of GEEKS bearing gifts.
Prince George:-"Taxes pay for all the services we have gotten used to in our modern societies. Without taxes from us working and business activities we would have to go back to living in trees or in caves."

You're partially right. So long as private goods and services are to be supplied on public account, the ultimate payment has to come from some form of taxation. I don't think anyone would deny that, Prince George, but it's only a PART of a much bigger picture.

For an ever increasing amount of modern taxation is levied NOT primarily to provide the public with goods and services we deem are best supplied by government, but rather to allow the otherwise un-repayable 'floating' debts of the private sector to continue to be serviced after they've been transformed into the un-repayable 'fixed' debts of the public one.

Even if a continual growth in the economy were always possible to maintain, and even if we could do what we cannot do, perpetually run a favourable balance of trade, the constantly increasing 'take' from taxation is unsustainable. It not only has to be reined in, before it buries us, it has to be reversed. Or we are going to end up slaves of the State in no less degree than the citizens of the old Soviet Union were slaves to their system.

We will be victims of an economy which can provide us with more than what we could ever consume physically, but one which we'll be largely unable to use to any of our own advantage. Because 'financially' we'll be increasingly hamstrung.

You, Prince George, and He spoke, and others on here who abhor the inanity of 'socialism' should be the first to recognise that we are increasingly being subjected to Lenin's prescription ~ crushing the middle-class between the twin grindstones of inflation and taxation. THAT is exactly what WE'RE getting under this BC Liberal government, the same as we would get it under the NDP. The only question is "Why?" Do the Liberals not know any better? Or are those pulling their strings from behind the scenes purposefully intending things to develop the way they will? To THEIR, not OUR, advantage.
palpoa, if they knew about the deposits 20 years ago maybe they would have done it. You think they jsut find deposits overnight?

ok bc approval, they still need federal approval...last time i checked fedral approval gave prosperity the red light.

15 billion in revenue....if ten mines were opened. no way will there ever be ten mines open up there. Possibly 4 max.

But still the line is great, going to create lots of work and will open up that part of the province for more exploration/mining and even new cities. its so gorgeous up there, it will bring more people to reside up there year round....

im gold_rush and thats my opinion...
