Prince George, B.C.- The Prince George Spruce Kings handed out their annual awards at the Player’s Awards Banquet last night. A total of ten player awards and one award for a volunteer were awarded in front of packed house of players, team staff, volunteers, fans and friends.
The first award presented was for the Volunteer of the Year to Kerry McIntyre - a dedicated volunteer that co-ordinated all of the Elementary School Cheer-offs and helped out during the games through the season. The equivalent award for community service from a player - the Craig Dzuiballe Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service - was presented to rookie goaltender Kirk Thompson.
The Scholastic Player of the Year was presented to Isaac Davies who maintained an ‘A’ average and received scholastic achievement recognition appearing on the Principal’s List. Davies also recently wrote his SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) and scored a 1740. The trophy for the Top Scorer was presented to the sixteen year old rookie, Jujhar Khaira who also took home the Rookie of the Year honours. Khaira was also nominated for Interior Division Rookie of the Year in the BCHL.
The Best Defenceman trophy was handed out to another rookie that joined the season midway through. Chase Golightly came in and quickly became a player that could be counted on to perform a defensive role while still providing offense with outlet passes and rushes.
The Most Improved Player of the Year was presented to Connor Tiechko who went from a setup man to a goal scorer in key situations while still maintaining a shutdown role defensively. Faiz Khan received the Most Inspiration Player Award. Having to start the season watching from the stands due to a pre-season injury, Khan came back and made an impact both offensively and physically.
The Seventh Player or Coach’s Award was presented to Jeff Earnest. Throughout the course of the season Earnest showed a desire to compete at a higher level and played in every situation and position. From the penalty kill to the powerplay and even a number of games as a defenceman, Earnest was always on the ice in key situations.
The final two awards were both presented to Trevor Esau. The Most Dedicated and Regular Season MVP awards were fitting for a player that stepped into his role on the blue line and perform them with the poise of veteran.
