I wonder when the ndp will get it that they would get far more traction if they could only endorse the Triple E Senate concept that makes American federalism so successful in its representation of regional interests balanced against regional population inequities.
If the ndp were to take the position of the reform party on a Triple E senate... then Harper would be cornered.
How would Harper not go along with a Triple E Senate when he would have a majority of votes in both Houses of Parliament. Harpers true colors would be exposed for all to see.
If Harper choose to be a hypocrite for the personal sake of power he would turn his back on his old reform base. If Harper supported the effort it would be the ndp that would get credit for the improvement to Canadian democratic accountability and it would inoculate them against liberal claims to legitimacy as a government of the the nation.

Ummm
Eagleone, have you been watching events in American politics?
I feel I must disagree with your notion that their system is "so successful".
The reality is that the turmoil and divisiveness is creaping over the border and affecting Canadian politics, to the detriment of our normally civil discourse.

Robert, I think you need to be more specific and not so general. What America has is a cultural problem brought on by big money controlling the electoral process and media. A US Federal Reserve that is owned and run by foreign banksters using America as an enabler of their globalization and shunting Americans out of real democratic options. In America their problems are cultural politics and not the system itself... if not for the system we would all be slaves to American power the world over.
The strength of the American system is the effective two houses... one representing populism, the other representing state rights... the sober second thought that mandates the interest of stakeholder diverse in state interests being reconciled with the interests of the majority. Canada too is a country with population concentrations that tend to make rules for regional economies at the expense of the regional economy as exampled by Prince George, Atlantic Canada ect and as such an effective Senate is the only real institutional change we can hope for... What type of institutional change would you say would address this clear problem... more of the same...?
