Someone from the city needs to drive on great street once to see its in absolute dire need of a resurfacing too!!!! Extremely dire need!!!!
Another year of not being able to get from point A to point B without major headaches...

I sure hope in the end it is worth it all..

and a chunk of that cold patch will pop out as soon as we get a cold snap... I have seen how they do these...cold patch dumped right in on top of the water... and they expect the patch to stay there...what a waste of time and money
I drive Ospika a lot. It sure continues to be a mess. Yesterday a whole section was one lane going north only. I just do not understand how this City can allow roads to deteriorate to this extent. It is totally beyond comprehension.
The city is also going to spend $220,000 to pave the parking lot at city hall. I'm sure lots of people have bent rims or damaged their vehicle suspension while driving in a PARKING LOT.
The major damage on Domano extends all the way to Gladstone. What the........ ? You can only use one lane below Trent unless you like smashing your vehicle through potholes. Makes no sense to me.
Incompetent management at it's finest!
I do not know anything about road paving, so I have one question.

Would it be more effective to actually rip out the pavement and start fresh? Or is it better to shave down a few inches of the pavement and pave overtop of it?
Selfish, selfish, selfish.

My road from my driveway to work should be wide, no traffic, no potholes and be plowed all the time, and also, I want my taxes reduced, because I had try drive over some compact snow last week.
Maybe just remove all the pavement and run graders over the gravel all the time just like they did on the Alaska Highway in the '70s. Lotta cracked windshields and sometimes a two foot high windrow of dirt and gravel down the centre line, but hey, you could do about 60 Mph if ya din't care to replace yer windshield every three months.
The whole BCR Site is a nightmare. Pacific St, Boundary road, Penn Road, Milwaukee Etc., are pounded to death daily by Chip, Logging, Transport Trucks. Those streets are also in dire need of re-paving. You have to drive as close to the center line as possible to miss the potholes and then take the chance that one of those big trucks won't take you out as they are doing exactly the same thing. Wake up City council and stop spending our tax dollars on artsy fartsy stuff for down town and take care of roads for all the people who work who work in the BCR Site.

There are more of out here than downtown that's for sure.
Hey but the city is going to buy trendy little green vehicles. They will be able to test its robustness on Domano.
"pounded to death daily by Chip, Logging, Transport Trucks"

Domano takes the same beating because the city allows truckers to take their rigs home at night.
Maybe install a few bathtub drains where the puddles form.
Just drove down Domano and paid attention. The lane going south is filled with major damage right to Gladstone. Cant believe they would leave that. Also anybody turn right from Hyw 16 onto Ferry lately? There no patching that, its destroyed
Ospika is completely destroyed too.
The city crumbles as we spend the majority of money on "wants" rather than "needs". I'm still pissed about that little foot bridge to nowhere for half a million. My street hasn't been paved since 1974 although the City did install "rough road" signs. New struts agin this year I guess.
All you have to do is look at the map of PG in the above article and see that this town is too big for how many people live here. SPRAWL says it all. If you go on the City website they say they maintain 600 km worth of roads. That's about the distance from here to Hope. So we are spending $3.5M on resurfacing. If we assume there are 70,000 people in Prince George then we are spending about $50 a person just to try and make the road smooth. Nevermind snow removal, sidewalks, sanding, signs, lights etc etc.

Let's face it, are we even resurfacing 1% of the existing roadways? That would be 6 kilometres.....there's no way we are repaving that much. It might add up to a couple of kilometres.

1 of 2 things need to change. Either we have more people moving in to help pay for the existing roadwork or our City taxes have to go up. Expecting costs to get cut at City Hall is a pipe dream.
Here's some info. that proves my point about SPRAWL in PG.

Syracuse, New York is a city that gets snow just like us and they maintain about 600 KM of roads. But there is a key difference to Syracuse........they have 750,000 people!!!!!

Here is web page where they talk about their snow clearing.

http://ithaca-cortland.ynn.com/content/top_stories/532182/to-plow-all-city-streets-would-take-more-than-24-hours/

They talk about having 40 trucks plowing during the day and 50 at night. Wow, it takes them 24 hours to clear the streets after a big dump. How long does it take them to do the same thing in PG?

So the next time some builder wants to add a new subdivision like the one above Canadian Tire, City Hall should give their head a shake and give a flatout......NOOOOOOOO. How many lots are there within the City that are empty or have a run down old house that could be used? I bet there are still tons.

MWK I have no idea of how long pavement should last but when last did any company or the government look into how to make it more durable? I believe there could be some tests done to find the best way to pave or to do the grade differently. There has to be a better way as pavement is getting to prohibitive to be redoing as often as is being done.

What I don't understand is why the repaving is done the way it is. Peeling off 1-2" of old pavement, and resurfacing over a damaged sub-surface just makes weak new roads.

To me the only way to repair a road in a way that doesn't fail within 5 years is to make repairs to the sub-surface, which is where the frost heaves in the first place! Tossing a couple of shovelfuls of gravel to fill the pothole in the lower layer, is ensuring that there will be a fresh failure of the top layer in short order. I watched the crew doing this on Domano last summer and I bet it will fail in record time.

Just doesn't make sense to me!
mwk, I disagree with your sprawl theory. I've lived here for 30 years and there isn't a whole lot more for roads today than there were back then. Back then and up until just the last decade or so, our road maintenance was done a whole lot different than it is these days. The city used to do crack sealing, an important preventive maintenance program. When was the last time anyone has seen a crack sealing crew in this town? I guarantee, you have seen tons of the material used to seal cracks laying all over our streets and have seen it for years without it being repaired. The city just allows it to fall apart and stands there watching our streets disintegrate before our very eyes.
Just as they have done with our current police station and probably many other of our buildings etc.
Another big problem with this city is that they allow heavy trucks to drive on almost every street in this town. They changed the bylaw a few years back that used to prevent these trucks from pounding the crap out of our streets unless they were doing business,to allow them to take their trucks home for lunch or whatever for a period up to 3 hours a day. Do you think the operators of these trucks are being billed extra on their taxes to pay for the damage they are doing to our streets? No they're not, but the rest of us are.

The state of our streets in this town is the direct result of incompetence! But hey, once the new police station, PAC, Kin4 and trail system is built and our great great grandchildren are still paying for them, they can look over at the bronze plaques bolted to the side of these monuments and read just who it was that ran our city like General Gadahfi.
