Earth Hour Just Hours Away

Prince George, B.C.- Today is the day. Earth Hour is set to take place around the globe at 8:30 this evening. That is the time you are encouraged to turn off the lights, and avoid using electricity for at least one hour.

Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by WWF and supported provincially by BC Hydro. Last year, the province’s electricity load dropped by 1.04 per cent during Earth Hour. The community of Burns Lake measured the highest reduction in consumption in B.C. at seven per cent. Prince George’s drop in consumption was not reported by BC Hydro last year, but some neighbouring communities did very well:

·        Quesnel was down 1.7%,
·        Mackenzie was down 1.5%
·        Williams Lake electrical consumption dropped  2.2%
·        McBride was down 0.7%
·        Houston‘s savings were 3.2%
·        Telkwa and Smithers were both down by 3% and Kitimat was down by 2.9%

Dave Cobb, BC Hydro’s president and CEO says Earth Hour’s goals complement BC Hydro’s conservation strategies "If everyone who participated last year turned off their unnecessary lights and appliances for just one hour every evening, the combined savings would be enough to power close to 2,200 homes for an entire year. That’s a goal worth exceeding.”

Prince George has been an active participant in this event since 2008, and will once again see the lights on the trees in front of City Hall turned off for the full night.

The City will also turn off office lighting and staff computers where appropriate and where safety is not compromised.

More than 80 communities throughout B.C. took part in Earth Hour last year.

The event this evening is calling on participants to take the event a little further, to “Go Beyond the Hour”, hence the plus sign on the Earth Hour logo this year.

This sounds like another Hydro scam....for every watt of power we don't burn it gives them that watt to sell to someone else..so we are lining their pockets...boy some people are dumb.

I see on my Hydro bill that my rate has just gone up, almost 25%..and I know my usage hasn't, in fact it has gone down in the last few years...so that 50% increase they promised us has already started....
But its hockey night in canada:(
At the hydro rates we're now paying just WHO is it that burns up juice using "unnecessary lights and appliances"?

The way they make it sound is the same way those preaching that "the world" is short of fresh drinking water make their line of b.s. sound.

That because we are so "wasteful" in using what we have in abundance here, and don't ration our water to minimal needs, or below, some poor beggar in sub-Saharan Africa is going thirsty. That we must be 'metered' and charged a penalty for our "wastefulness", as if, somehow, this was going to slake the thirst of the parched in some far away land.

And it's no different with this crock of bull the promoters of "Earth Day" are peddling here. Those nuts and berries ditzbrains who make up the "we're so concerned for the future of the Earth" crowd are being duped royally by those who see their brand of screwball environmentalism for exactly what it is ~ a ready made excuse for further tapping a cash cow they'll eventually milk dry.

It's not hydro-electricity, or fresh drinking water we're short of. Or very much, if anything else that we need that's real. The ONLY shortage WE have is one of 'money' (in OUR hands, in its current relationship to 'price values' of all goods and services expressed in 'money') ~ and that's only because we continue to let those we've allowed to administer it keep it in short supply, to artificially enhance its 'value' TO THEM. Taxing and penalising us further for being able to use what is 'real' and already in abundance is a great aid to that process.
"we are lining their pockets...", the "they" being BC Hydro.

Of course, we, the citizens of BC own BC Hydro. That means the pockets we are lining are our own!
Sorry folks the earth has 24 hours. Conserve all the time not just for an hour.
I wont be cold, turn up the Heat or add another Log on the Fire, to Hell with the one who want to export all our Resources . Don't forget to book your Trip to Hawaii. To many Lemmings in this World.
"Of course, we, the citizens of BC own BC Hydro. That means the pockets we are lining are our own!"

Do you really believe that?

For me, I am turning on every light and running anything that doesnt disturb me during hockey night in Canada, in defiance to this BS. Just a few months ago they were telling us ALL to light up the night with as many christmas lights as we could. How many years did we shorten the lifespan of lighting 2200 homes that night?
I'm celebrating by burning a Prius followed by the tradition pouring of used motor oil down the storm sewer.
Ammora With the huge contracts fetted out to Independent power producers and the bird mincers our pockets are getting fleeced, not lined.

Turn lights off for an hour, what a joke. Why not for a day or a week and cook over cow dung. Hey lets have a cow dung barby up the hill.
I juiced up all my rechargeable batteries and will unplug the computer and run on batteries with that as well. I love candle light.

Other than that, I have turned the lights off now instead of tonight. I do that everyday. I save the electricity for the evening/night. With all that saving, I am still trying to figure out why BCHydro keeps sending me bills. If I save 10 hours per day during the day, I should be able to use 6 of it at night and have some left over. By the end of the month, Hydro should owe me money.

Bummer!!! The whole thing is rigged.
It's Earth Hour every hour in North Korea. They will compensate for me. I will have to turn a light on to admire my collection of my hoarded incandescent light bulbs. No mercury fer me, thanks.
I'll make sure I have every light in our houshold on, even going to take the curly ones out and put in 100W. The States still owe us money. Cut em off.
I'm with you acrider54. All the lights are going on, every electrical appliance I have will be running at full throttle. And it won't be for just one hour.

I am going to crank the heat (electric) up to the max, open the windows and doors, and put a warm jacket on.

I conserve energy all year, I don't need some fool telling me I should turn my lights out for one hour on a given Saturday night!

taxi
This is nothing more than a test to see how many sheep there are out there.
wow all you people doing your thing to save this side of the world, what about the the othe side at war?
They are dieing for us so we can waste power. The worst natural resource users on the planet!
EARTH HOUR? Duh! Sounds like a feel good thingy made up by all those dreadful Liberal living hippy dudes.
They have incandecent 60 watt lights at Homedepot. Did my vacuuming and laundry during the hour. Oh if Hydro says they saw a power usage drop it is a lie. The power system is in constant flux and a tiny drop if any cannot be seen in the noise.
it's an hour later in Alberta, should I turn my heat down yet, turn down a few lights etc.? I did all my laundry tonight, smells like pure "Sunlight"! Dryer worked fine, had it on regular high heat. The energy saver button didn't seem to want to work.

Anyway, tomorrows another day and we will all be back to using electricity. It is one of those things that we just enjoy. I go camping a few times a year just to remind me why I like electricity.
You can turn off your lights if you want but the srmatures at the dam are still turning and the maintenance crew is still on duty 24 hrs a day. You aren't saving didiley by turning anything off. This whole scenario is just to make us "feel good" about ourselves. Its a "feel good", accomplish nothing task. One day the government will tell us to bark like dogs at 6 in the morning and we'll all do it but it won't accomplish anything.
Wow supertech are you sure the armatures are still turning? Revolving field or revolving armature which is it? hmmmmm.

FYI they can shut down generators and close the penstock to that generator which stops water from reaching the turbine. That water can then be used another day when the demand is high like when the US needs it.

Lights off no demand, shutdown generators saving water for to sell to the US. Smart idea.
