Prince George, B.C.- We are heading to the polls.
Moments ago, the House of Commons voted against supporting the federal budget, and that is a vote of “non-confidence”. The final vote was 156 in favour of the non confidence motion , 145 against.
The Prime Minister is expected to go to the Governor General tomorrow morning to request that Parliament be dissolved and an election date be set.
The most likely date for a ballot is May 2nd.
The outcome, of the confidence vote was clear long before any “ayes” or “nays” were registered this morning.
The House spent about an hour before the vote, saying thank you and good bye to Speaker of the House Peter Milliken. He has been the longest serving speaker of the House, having been in that position since January of 2001.
One by one, Members of Parliament rose to thank him for his years of service, pointing out that since Confederation, the Speaker has been called upon 10 times to cast the deciding vote, and five of those occasions it was Milliken who cast the vote.
