Prince George, B.C. - The Minister of Finance for B.C., Barry Penner, has announced  the  referendum on the HST will be held sooner than the  September  scheduled  vote and it will be a mail in ballot.

Penner says  further details will be finalized by an order- in- council,  but the  government is working toward  holding the  referendum  on June 24th.

Penner has confirmed, the  vote will be  a simple majority,  and there will be no  change in the actual wording of the  question.  The referendum question will be  exactly the same as drafted by the acting chief electoral officer:

"Are  you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?  Yes/No."
The voting process will be by Mail-in ballot. Moving to a mail-in ballot is expected to save taxpayers $18 million and address potential voter fatigue. It will be undertaken by Elections BC in a neutral fashion.

The Province will also provide funding to ensure proponents and opponents are able to participate in the public dialogue about the HST in a fair and transparent manner. Further details on the funding will be provided as they become available.

Good work! Things are humming along in a nice orderly and relatively quick fashion.

Hmmm, I will vote in favour of the HST. I don't have 1.6 billion dollars to pay back the Federal government.

I wonder where it is going to come out of. I hope it comes out of social work and education, because we need the health care.
Good luck with the HST vote, I hope it gets thrown out. However, it's not my business anymore.

In Alberta we have GST, and thats it. I love it. No carbon tax, no PST etc. And, I filled up yesterday, and fuel was $1.089 per litre.

I don't trust their way of doing the vote on teh HST... is it too easy to say the referendum to Stop the HST was defeated... how many bags of votes against the HST will be conveniently lost? the deck is over stacked in the governments favor as far as I am concerned.
The Gov. needs money to supply us with the services that we demand. If they don't get it from the HST ,they will get from somewhere else. Do the math....5% GST plus 7% PST equals the 12% HST. With the exception of a few services , what is the big deal? Retailers love it... Nobody is exempt at the till. If you vote it down, it will just show up somewhere else. And we will still have to pay back the 1.6 bil. to the feds. In the long run HST is a good fair tax system. It is possible that some things should be exempt, but all in all it is a good tax as far as taxes go.
He spoke: They can take it out of your's and campbell's pension.
Agreed Racer!

My guess is that the HST will be defeated, Christy will call an election and win it, then the PST will be raised to 8%. Actually, the NDP will also raise the PST if they form the next government, so take your pick.
Racer, I wouldn't think of making accusations of possible fraud against Elections BC unless I had 100% proof, not even as a so-called joke.
I defy anyone on these posts to tell me how much money the Provincial Government has actually received from the Federal Government for the implementation of the HST. My understanding is that we have received approx $500 Million so far. The Balance yet to come. Lets get some numbers please.

Also for those who support this stupid tax, and use the lame excuse that the money has to come from somewhere. Whats your problem???? Where the hell do you think the money came from before. It came for business and corporations. If the PST is re-instated these business's and corporations will once again pay this tax.,

The question should explain this to you. Reinstating the PST in Conjuction with the GST. Get it?????

If the HST was a $1.9 Billion dollar tax shift from business and corporations to taxpayers, then it logically follows that reinstating the PST is a tax shift back from consumers to business and corportations.

All this BS as to where the Government will get the money, has no credence, because they will get the money from reinstating the tax, to where it was in June of 2010.

I wish people would just take a little time and think about what is taking place, before they shoot from the lip.

Even if the Goverment received all of the $1.6 Billion from the Federal Government, this amount can be paid back by having it deducted from the transfer payments from the Federal Government over a period of years. No one would even notice the difference.

So it comes down to this. If you want to pay the taxes for big corporations, and big business, ie; oil companies, pulp mills, lumber mills, mines, etc; etc; then vote to keep the HST. If you want these big profit highrolling companies to pay a fair share of the taxes in this Province, like they did for the past couple of decades by paying the PST then vote to get rid of the HST.

Its not complicated. Use your heads for something besides a **hat rack**.

Palopu
We can't afford to re-instate the PST. We have closd all those offices and paid out all the employees. That probably cost a billion by itself. Yes, it was the wrong thing to do and it was not wanted but to change back would cost us 6 billion and it would also cause a sharp rise in the PST; believe 10%?
supertech, I call BS on what you say! Never ever too late to go back on a bad move!

It is time Government makes do with what we give them, not with what they want to take from us! I say turn off the tap to the rich f@%&$ and let them go it alone. Do you hear me people in favour of the PAC?
Why should we trust the Liberals with this mail in ballot...hell they couldn't even get their internal party vote sorted out properly
We need to understand that these taxes are NOT funding public works/programs. The HST and Carbon Tax are paying olympic debt, nothing more. If you feel a 2 week party down south was worth it, by all means support the HST. If you feel 20 years of sky-high taxes for that party is too much, then don't. They can sell BC Place and Gordo's summer home to the Chinese to pay for it for all I care, but these taxes need to go.
I will be voting to get rid of this rip off tax. I hope every person in BC will take the time to vote to get rid of this ripoff. I am fed up with paying taxes for rich corporate pigs. Pigs at the trough. If they don't like it then these rich pigs can move out a here. All these movie making outfits and all these places I hope they move. These pig companies can pay it and I am voting to get rid of HST. This province survived many decades before without this HST and we the people want the PST/GST system back. Every person I know is of like mind. I will be personally urging ALL citizens to help revoke this rip off tax.
Remember the old liberal line about the HST. Revenue neutral. Voting no to the HST is nothing more than voting that the old tax system be re-instated where a tax shift from the consumer to industry takes place. Forget the 1.6 billion. Who knows how much has been received and there is also the fact the Feds have collected additional coin for almost a year which should offset a portion of the 1.6 billion. There is also the fact anyone buying an auto privately now gets hit with an extra 5%. Pretty nice cash cow.
During the run up to the last election the Liberals had a read my lips budget deficit of $500 million and after the election it was announced at 2.5 billion.
I thought Penner was the Attorney General. Falcon is the Minister of Finance.
My guess is that if the HST is voted out, and we go back to PST and GST, that the previously exempt things under PST will no longer be exempt.

The extra money from these items will go to fund the PST tax refund for the businesses. Same as now. What was the figure? Something like 2 billion dollars a year tax saving for the businesses, and increase for the consumer.
I am a consumer and I don't have a government advocating for some multimillion dollar company to pay my taxes. So you bet your boots I'm going to vote against it. Oh and by the way I won't be thinking the government's on my side either.
"Why should we trust the Liberals with this mail in ballot...hell they couldn't even get their internal party vote sorted out properly."

The internal party vote was handled by an independent bonded agency which has successfully conducted hundreds of votes of this type. Canada Post had an initial glitch which was corrected in time. All members were alerted more than once by phone and emails to call a special number or go to a website where they could obtain a new password if they had not received theirs in the mail by a certain date.

It was a total success.

I wonder what the question on the ballot will actually ask. Are so naive to think it would be a simple yes or no?
??? ! yea and well my cheque is too ! idiots
