Prince George, B.C. – Before the non confidence vote in the House of Commons on Friday, the Government announced it would extend the amnesty for   owners of firearms to comply with federal firearms legislation.

The Government has extended, until May 16, 2013, the amnesty that protects non-compliant owners of non-restricted firearms from criminal liability while they are taking steps to comply with the licencing and registration requirements of the Firearms Act and the Criminal Code.

The extension should allay criticism during an election campaign that the  Conservatives failed in their promise to abolish the registry.

Giving an amnesty for doingor not doing something is not the same as abolishing a requirement that it be done. If the registry still exists, then the promise has not been kept, despite the spin. Does it still exist? I'm not a gun owner so I don't keep tabs on this particularly.
The gun registry doesn't exist for the people that don't register their guns.

For those that do register their guns the scary part is when they phone you and ask for the information you already gave them. It's like they lost it or something.
Nothing to do with Safety , it is all about collecting another FEE or Tax ,what next?
Some estimates are that half the long guns in Canada are not registered. With this level of compliance the register is of limited value. Even with full compliance the value of the register would be highly debatable. In fairness to Harper & co., they did try to abolish the register quite recently but were not supported by enough members from the other parties. The paperwork associated with registration and transfers is brutal, but the fees have been discontinued.
The gun registry and the entire Liberal firearms act is a total farce. The only way to sort this whole mess out, is to repeal the current firearms act, and return to the FAC, It wasn't broke, and they should have left it alone. The FAC had ALL the same requirements that the current farce has. Guns were registered when purchased, and you could not acquire one without an FAC. The FAC was a certificate generally referred to as a gun license. It was still under federal law and it made NO ONE a criminal for the simple possession of a legally obtained firearm. You want COMPROMISE? Go back to what worked and had the consent of the firearms owners. There is no reason for the mess we have now! Simply OWNING a firearm should never make anyone a criminal.
It costs money to register? I sure didn't have to pay anything when I renewed mine. The very first time we paid but not anymore.

LaserGuy, you only had to register handguns not long guns with the old FAC system.

So in a nutshell that is what we have now, the old FAC system with the long gun register requirement. You take a course and get your PAL (Possesion Acquisition License)which is also your gun license. The POL (Possession Only) isn't an option anymore.
Leave me alone with my rifle. I was a soldier when I was younger and we had to tear our rifels down and clean them even when they were clean already. We slept with our rifles and they were an extension of our arm. I didn't commit any crime with it nor do I intend to. I registered it with the R.C.M.P. in the Yukon and I still have the papers to that effect. So just don't bug me about registering my rifle cause I won't shoot you but I'll kick you in the *ss.
Fear any gov't that fears your guns!
