Prince George, B.C.- The 10% hike in your hydro bill that was supposed to kick on the 1st of April, is on hold. That doesn’t mean there won’t be an increase, it just might not be as high as initially planned.

The rate had been approved by BCUC a couple of weeks ago, but   BC Hydro’s spending plans are being questioned by the Provincial Government.

The hike was supposed to the first 10% hike in five straight years of 10% increases to pay for BC Hydro’s $6 billion dollar upgrade plan.

The Province and the utility are supposed to review the overall plan before heading back to the BCUC for a review which is set for April 8th.

10%...I wish.... try almost 25% on my bill anyways...effective in April..or so said my March bill...

if their excuse for the raise wasn't so lame I might not mind so much......

what other business can operate, supply a service, and not have to put money away for the maintence and upkeep and eventually for replacing of their equiptment...
only government owned businesses...
and I for one am getting sick of it
Give me a break BCracer. BC Hydro rates are the lowest in the country if not the world and your complaining.

They do need the money to build these big dams that are going to pay us dividends in the future. Just look around and you will see everybody is plugged into a cel phone, got the HD TV on and soon will be plugging in electric vehicles.

After you look at how low the rates are in BC(above) take a look at California electrical bills and for 750 kilowatts you would pay about $113. So that's about double what we pay.

Oh and the putting money away for maintenance and upkeep argument is pretty weak since when was the last time you saw hydro equipment look old and outdated......never. Besides you also have to remember this is a Provincial crown corporation so it tends to lose any extra money to the Province.

BC Hydro is a pretty good company and we have enjoyed cheap electricity for years.
A dam pays for itself. A powerline to nowhere (NW BC) with no hope of profit in the next 50 years or more is something that requires a rate hike.
Hydro already has fees we pay that purportedly go toward future costs;
Rate Rider: 4% of the total charge
Basic Charge: +13 cents/day
Anyhow, between the hst, and the increases we know are coming every year for at least three years, there has never been a better time to conserve.
