Prince George, B.C.- As of tomorrow, the City of Prince George will have a new  website.

www.princegeorge.ca is a revised, revamped  site that  is part of the myPG in action initiatives.

The new site, which was  developed by City Staff, will replace the existing site and will showcase social media communications, feature stories, City facts of the day, community champion’s profiles, and an advanced search bar and navigation. Also, frequently viewed pages and quick answers will be made available on the home page.

Mayor Dan rogers says the  new site will  allow the City to reach out  more effectively to  residents of Prince George

To access the City’s website on March 30, 2011, visit www.princegeorge.ca . The City’s former web address, www.city.pg.bc.ca , will also take users to the City’s revised website.

and in another year there will be an announcement of another new city website.
What we need to launch is some of the management at City Hall into outer space with no return ticket.
Cheers
Taxes will be going up 10% to pay for web developer.
Sure wish Rodgers would reach out to me. I am stuck in a pot hole and could use a helping hand.
I'm thinking the new website will be a great venue for the spinners at City Hall to tell us how many pieces of snow removal equipment they have working or how many hundreds of thousand potholes they filled yesterday. Gotta get the spin story out.
Anytime I read or hear the word initiative in conjunction with any level of government announcement, I cringe.
Initiative is a quality that is in short supply some of the younger crowd these days, but the spin doctors seem to sling the term around a lot.
I am sure that the new, improved website will really boost the City ;)
Come to think of it though, the old one really sucked, imho, so maybe this will really be better.
metalman.
It is 6:50 am on Wednesday morning and the new site is the same as the old site ....

Something about the best laid plans of mice and men comes to mind .....

If there is one thing I learned a long time ago when it comes to PR, announce the new thing when it is in place, not before. That way you will save yourself lots of embarrassment.

Oh well, maybe when someone comes to work they will discover it.
Did anyone notice the order in which the new features were listed:

1. showcase social media communications,
2. feature stories,
3. City facts of the DAY,
4. community champion’s profiles, and
5. an advanced search bar and navigation.
6. and, as an afterthought, frequently viewed pages and quick answers.

I guess we are all different.

My view is that they got the order of importance reversed. Also, nothing about more core information which will give the City operations more transparency such as is available on many of the excellent City sites from across the country.
Wow who would have thought that a simple website would initiate a "whine and cheese" party.
On an open site like this? I think most people who read this site would have thought that.
Gus have you read some of the above comments? OMG people pick your battles. The city launching an updated website is hardly something they have done to bitch about. Your's were no better on this matter. The website wasn't running at the time you happend to get up, make a coffee and sit down at your pc. Boo Hoo. Programmers make mistakes just like the rest of us including yourself. Pick your battles folks and your day will go much better.

Off to the grill, cheers.
Anything should be better than the previous website. It was a killer.
Burgerluver ....

You might not like this, but here is my first impression of just the URL.

http://www.princegeorge.com

or http://www.princegeorge.ca

The first gets you to ABC communications because they have registered the url in 1997

Expiration Date: 2012-10-29
Creation Date: 1997-10-30
Last Update Date: 2009-10-05

Name Servers:
ns1.netbistro.com
ns2.netbistro.com

When people put in URLs to find a site that they remember but did not jot down, I think they still typically use .com rather than .ca, especially in North America.

So, most webmasters will try to make sure that no one has at least the .com address, or else consider switching the name. princegeorgecity.ca and .com are both available ....

The more important the owner, the more important that will be.

In my opinion, the City should have tried to buy princegeorge.com and established a redirect for those who type it in wrong.

It will be interesting to see how many hits ABC Communications will now get. Maybe in the interest of good citizenship, they will hand it over to the City.
