Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has moved up in the Best Cities in Canada rankings by MoneySense magazine.

Prince George was listed as 134 out of 180 communities in the 2011 report. That’s up from the ranking of 164 from last year, and slightly better than the 137 rank in 2009.

For 2011, Money Sense ranks P.G. high in the following categories:
  • Discretionary income      35/180
  • Job prospects                 52/180
  • Household income          56/180
On the negative side, Prince George is rated as being among the worst when it comes to having a low crime rate (165 / 180)   the weather was squeezed out of the top half of rated communities coming in 101/180, and population growth was ranked 145/180.

Ottawa was ranked the best City in the country for the second straight year. The only B.C. community to make the top 10 was Victoria which came in 2nd. Victoria was ranked # 8 in 2010.

The worst city in the country?

New Glasgow Nova Scotia.   This is the second time in three years that the Nova Scotia community has been at the bottom of the list.    Quesnel and Williams Lake are both very close to the bottom.
Quesnel was ranked 176/180 and Williams Lake was 177/180

It is April Fools Day.
Just goes to show how useless these rankings are. Ottawa is THE most boring city ever. No one wants to live there believe me. Every city in BC and Alberta should be before every other city in the nation (cant speak for the Maratimes, but Ive been nearly everywhere else).
165/180 for low crime rate? Are we not number one anymore?
Born in BC have you ever spent time in Ottawa?

I've been there a few times and find it to be a fairly nice City. Best in Canada, well I guess that might be a stretch, but this article is a ranking based on certain criteria. Of course there are going to be a lot of different opinions about what makes a City great.

Hopefully, the crime stats for PG are on the decline. It sure would be nice if we our City would grow again. 70-80K is a odd number. When you get to 100,000 people then there seems to be a lot more chains that consider it a good market to jump into.

I for one don't really like the "small town" mentality. Of course I'm not wishing PG was a big city either. But medium size status would be nice. Where we have most of the services and a good commercial sector so that we don't need to go to Vancouver or Edmonton. That would be nice.

The City of PG loves it when we move up in the rankings. They see our discretionary and houshold income numbers rise and they use it as a tax increase meter!
Not only a tax increase meter...check fuel prices between us [at the upper end] and Quesnel/Williams Lake [at the bottom end]....those stats just open the door to raping and pillaging.....
I've been to Ottawa several times & always find lots to do. It's a very beautiful city.
And what was PG ranked at in the overall ratings? Just wondering.
Cheers
Born in BC why should we believe you? Ive been to Ottawa and thought it was great. Friends have lived there and raved about it. Ive read several articles about its thriving growth economy.

Ottawa is a great city and I'm actually relocating there from PG very soon.

In the outlying areas, housing isn't that much more expensive than PG. It has clean air, fine dining, cool neighbourhoods, great shopping, diverse entertainment options, easy access to outdoor activities, quaint small towns AND big city amenities and a downtown core that you can spend hours in just taking everything in. I haven't even mentioned the history, the cultural experiences and stuff like the trail networks. It may not have the sheer raw beauty of a place like Vancouver, but on an overall basis, I'd say that yes, it's right up there as a top place to live in Canada.
Well I agree with you mwk on that one, P.G. Is to small for my liking but apparently it's supposed to boom..... But we'll see :) hopefully it does.

I hear you NMG. I attempted to move to Ottawa in 2007 to be in the same city as my family. Ottawa is everything that you mentioned, it's a great place to live for sure. Being an easterner, there is certainly a strong draw to the rich history, maple trees, brick architecture and the whole feel of Ontario.
What brought me back to PG was the people. I have lived in many places in my life. Despite all of our shortcomings, the people here in PG are the best in the world in my opinion...in my world anyway...lol
