l-r John Horgan, Nicholas Simons, Mike Farnworth,  Dana Larsen and Adrian Dix  wait their turn to speak on issues at a leadership debate in Prince George.

Prince George, BC - While it was a friendly debate, over 100 voting delegates in Prince George got to look at the five candidates vying for the leadership of the NDP on Monday night.

The five Candidates, Mike Farnworth, Dana Larson, Nicholas Simons, Adrian Dix and John Horgan were seeking support from a friendly gallery.

If applause was any indication, the top three at the beginning of the race, Farnworth, Horgan and Dix received the most attention.

Mike Farnworth has already received support from nine of the 12 so called dissidents headed by Jenny Kwan who moved to replace Carole James.

Mike Farnworth said  "The province will need to address the transition away from carbon fuels and we must move now to protect the future". The carbon tax Farnworth says brings in about $720 million dollars while the energy sector receives $500 million in subsidies.

Dix said as Premier he would convert the carbon tax into jobs. "We need to use the carbon tax money to support education".

John Horgan said "We can in this province produce more jobs by undertaking projects such as the UNBC Bio–Energy plant to move away from carbon use."

BC Hydro also received a good airing.  All of the candidates said that the $950 million dollar smart meter program would be done away with when they become government.

Adrian Dix said "We need to take back BC Hydro", while John Horgan added that Independent power producers are being paid up to 100-120 dollars a MWH while BC Hydro is getting 35 dollars for a MWH. Horgan said "We have transferred public wealth to private owners and we need to take that back".

Mike Farnworth said "we must stop the privatization of BC Hydro."

The New Democrats will  chose a new leader on April 17th.

I have never been an NDP supporter, and I am still not sure about them but one thing I am impressed with, is Mike Farnworth.
He is realistic and he knows his stuff when it comes to the issues that we are concerned about.
Dix,not so much, and he and Farnworth are the only ones worth even listening to.
Dix however, got one thing right...we do need to take back B.C.Hydro before it becomes lost forever.
We can say thank you to Gordon Campbell and his corporate buddies for that!
As it stands now,I will at least consider voting NDP should Farnworth win the leadership,as I suspect a lot of people will.
I am sure not liking the other options!
The carbon tax was opposed by the NDP. Now that it brings in piles of money it has been quietly incorporated as a handy source of tax money into the latest NDP agenda.

Shouldn't it be removed if it was such a bad idea?

What gives?

The Smart Meter program has already been postponed as other Hydro projects are more urgently required, such as infrastructure upgrades.

Interesting thing with the Smart Meters.
Walked along the side of the house a while ago,and there was a digital meter!
I assume that is what this is,but it would have been nice if they told me about it!
They can't exchange your meter without interrupting the power. You would know about it if they did it recently. Get the model name and any other info of the label on the meter and Google it. Bingo!

BTW, like natural gas meters, hydro meters are routinely changed out for maintenance and calibration checks. the utility has a rotation schedule. Newer models may have a digital readout rather than number dials.

Just because it's digital doesn't automatically make it a real Smart Meter.

"Dix said as Premier he would convert the carbon tax into jobs. "We need to use the carbon tax money to support education"."

Why divert the money which was collected as a carbon tax to a different use? This money is to be used to advance green projects which directly replace fossil fuel energy with energy from renewable resources and energy from wind, solar and geothermal sources.

I object to this tax money being hijacked for other agendas.

These people are n*ts.
I object to this tax money being hijacked for other agendas.

And where do you think this money is going at the present time? Tell us. Would it be general revenue?
Cheers
I assume they changed it when I wasn't home,PrinceGeorge.
I gave them hell for that...what if something important had tripped out when they pulled the old meter without my knowledge?
Anyway,I was away and had almost forgotten about it, so I will now find out what's what!
And thanks for the reminder!
For anyone interested,B.C.Hydro now has a webite where you can sign up online and monitor your usage with these new meters...I did that this morning.
When I called,I was told this meter is not yet on line as a "Smart Meter".
Hmmm.....
And I agree...I also object to the carbon tax revenue going to anything other than green industry projects!
Remember that carbon credits from the school districts are being used to fund renovations in private resorts in Whistler. Kinda nuts, eh?
Retired 02:"And where do you think this money is going at the present time? Tell us. Would it be general revenue? Cheers"

Well, if it indeed goes to general revenue I would find that objectionable too!

I do not know where it is going NOW, but when someone publicly announces that he (Dix) will definitely divert it to a different purpose I do know where it would be going! I don't like it!

Cheers!
"Remember that carbon credits from the school districts are being used to fund renovations in private resorts in Whistler. Kinda nuts, eh?"

Have the school districts been selling carbon credits to make money?

Probably.
Our school district is not buying any credits-they are paying about $200,000 a year and the money is going to renovations in private resorts.

We should be very careful in interpreting what politicians say in debates like these When Dave Barrett's NDP took office back in the early 1970's they quickly doubled hydro rates, claiming our businesses and industries were getting too much of a bargain with BC Hydro's "low" rates under Social Credit.

And when these guys moan about what private power generators are being paid per MWH compared to what BC Hydro gets, they could very well really mean that they'd like BC Hydro to get just as much.

I'd like to hear any of them say openly and clearly that we're already paying more than we should be paying for hydro, and that their goal was to lower that cost to ALL British Columbians ~ businesses, industries, and consumers alike.

After all, how many other businesses get to tell their customers that they're raising the price of its products because they need additional profit to improve they're production capabilities? If only we could all do THAT! Does West Fraser, or Canfor, or any of the smaller firms that make up our forest industry get to do THAT? How about our miners? TeckCominco, for instance? In a pig's eye, they do! ONLY a monopoly or cartel can get away with that type of thing. Every other business has to finance their improvements out of EXISTING or PROJECTED profits, gleaned from operating more efficiently, not from gouging the public for MORE.
Mining is finally starting to get the credit it has long deserved here in B.C.
If the NDP are lucky enough to pull off a win at the polls,we may see that they have a new attitude towards it.
Why?
Farnworth has a very good chance of winning the leadership of the NDP...and guess what?
He is a mining engineer by trade.
That can only help.
