Prince George, B.C.-  The call is out for people to be special medal bearers in a relay that is reminiscent of the Olympic Torch relay.

The Rick Hansen Man in Motion 25th Anniversary relay is set to come across Canada, and Prince George has been chosen to host an “End of Day Celebration”.

The event will be a time for people to come together to recognize local difference makers and talent, raise awareness about accessibility, and celebrate progress that has been made to inspire a new generation to take action.

Like the Olympic Torch relay, people have to submit their names, or names of people who have made a difference in order to win a spot as a relay participant. You can do that online by going to  www.RickHansenRelay.com  Each participant will pass a single, Rick Hansen Medal  ( shown in photo at right) to the next participant.

The online contest is open to: individuals who are creating a more accessible and inclusive world, youth-leaders who are encouraging their generation to embrace positive change, persons who are protecting the environment or any Canadian who is seeking ways to improve the lives of others.
The relay will select 7,000 Canadians to take part in the relay which will start in Cape Spear Newfoundland (the eastern most part of the country) on August 24th of this year.

The relay will visit more than 600 communities, and will come to Prince George in March of  2012. The relay will end in Vancouver on May 22nd having covered some 12,000 kilometers.

“The City of Prince George is thrilled to be a part of this journey and we look forward to working with the community and the Rick Hansen Foundation to celebrate the arrival of the 25th Anniversary Relay,” said Mayor Dan Rogers.
