Prince George, B.C. -   Experiencing science is the way to get people excited about it - so says the President and CEO of Science World, Bryan Tisdall.

Tisdall was speaking at this evening's Family Fun Night at the visiting Science Expo.  The two-day event on at the Civic Centre is one of four-themed expos being held around B.C. as part of the provincial government's 'Year of Science' this 2010-11 school year to raise awareness about the importance of science.

He says to impress the importance of science: 1. it's got to matter in your life - it's the clean water from your tap, the toothpaste you use, the camera you take a picture with; and 2. you've got to 'get your hands dirty' experiencing it.

And judging by the cheering and clapping that followed two experiments involving local MLAs Shirley Bond and Pat Bell, the 'experience' was much appreciated. (Click on photo at right to watch the excitement.)

Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister, Pat Bell, says one of his goals is to help raise the level of awareness and science skills in the province.  "And it's to encourage all of you to think about careers in science and the things that have yet to be invented and all of the cool opportunities that will be associated with a career in science."

"B.C.'s economic future is all about science - we want young people to get excited about taking science and math," says Bell. "Over the next 10 years, about one in every 8 job openings is going to be science-related."

More than 1400 students from all over the region - including Quesnel, Dog Creek, Mackenzie, McBride, Vanderhoof, and Fraser Lake - are expected to have visited and engaged with exhibitors and their interactive displays by the time the event wraps up tomorrow afternoon.
