Prince George, B.C. - Pardon the pun, but it is a bare-minimum budget in a city that destroys the most bears annually in the province...

The 2011 Northern Bear Awareness program is about to get underway thanks to an $8-thousand dollar grant from the BC Conservation Foundation, another $6-thousand dollars from Shell Canada will allow work to continue on the Northern Bear Awareness Society's urban bear collaring project.

Society President, Dr. Roger Wheate, says the BCCF grant is used to hire a student coordinator for the bear season, but everyone else volunteers their time.

"We did put on a pub night in the fall because we just had to raise some more money for the day-to-day operations," says Wheate, "So that was very successful, it raised a couple of thousand dollars." He adds the Spruce City Wildlife does makes an in-kind donation by providing office space and facilities for the summer program.

As for the urban bear project, Wheate says the grant goes almost entirely on the cost of the GPS collars.  He says, "(Biologist Lana Ciarniello) does what she's contracted to do, but she's essentially volunteering to do it because she gets almost no money for a salary - she's essentially doing it for costs."

The NBAS president says, "Ideally, she'd have six or 10 bears collared, but there's only enough at the moment for three."

Bear Aware programs are aimed at raising awareness and reducing bear-human conflicts in B.C. communities.  The City of Prince George is three-steps in to the six step process. (click here, for previous story)

Dr. Wheate says donations to the society are definitely always welcome, "Generally, we're always looking for a little bit more to make things work - it's very small money."

Okay PG why don't you practice what you preach!

Remove all the fruit trees owned by the City of PG or pay someone to make sure the fruit is harvested.

That would be a good start.
One of the remaining points is this one:

"Develop and maintain a Bear proof municipal solid waste management system.

For the City of Prince George, this means more focus on curbside garbage collection.

This may include such items as garburator installations or purchase of BEAR PROOF AUTOMATED CONTAINERS/LIDS."

Therein lies the problem. They were not bear smart when they bought the ones we now have. Or they were bear smart, but did not want to spend the money (tax us) to be bear smart.

Sort of like pot hole smart, ice arena maintenance smart, sprawl smart, downtown smart, and all the other smarts ...... :-)
Oh, speaking of garbage, I left out recycling smart .... and also air quality smart .....
April 1st was opening day of spring bear season. Broadheads all sharpened and ready to rock!
If everyone prevented bears from getting at their garbage, us bear hunters wouldn't have to travel so far from home to harvest garbage free bear meat.

Come on PG lets get it together!
"Remove All the Fruit Trees" ,have you gone nuts, what will be next leave the Country so the Bears can enjoy it , the Reason there are so many Bears is few get hunted today, I do like Bears but not being watched by them on my own Place, so Bears watch out and stay in the Bush! Nothing beats a Rifle to make your Place Bear Proof. To many Bear lovers , move back to Lower Mainland and you are in good Company. To many Rules in the City, live in the Country and be free.
Saw my first pile of bear sh.. today on a trail off fairmont, everyone stay in your houses, keep the kids off the streets and out of the bush.
Outwest, Last I checked you can't hunt in city limits unless you are in the approved bow hunting area. Discharging a firearm in the city limits is illegal.
So the city is always preaching to pick your fruit but they don't pick their own trees. So if the city removes all those trees they won't pick that would be a start. Then fine all those home owners that let their fruit rot on the grass.
Okay, which is it?

1. Remove all things which attract bears into the City?

2. Provide wildlife corridors in new subdivision layouts to receive cit approval?

Which is it?

1. Approve new commercial development in the "park" used by the golf club.

2. Prevent leakage of commercial development outside of downtown.

Our City mommies and daddies have a hard time making up their minds. Life is so tough.
Shoot the bears is a sure cure for the problem. It's not like there is a shortage of them.
They are a member of the pig family and should be treated as such. .

The current estimate of the black bear population in British Columbia is 120,000–160,000. This is about one quarter of all black bears in Canada. Who is doing the counting?
That sounds more like a guess to me. I believe there are more than that from here to the Yukon border.
Uh, a budget has NOTHING to do with destroying bears. Bears natural tendency to over-populate does. The solution is simple: lead. To the bear awareness people: get a real job!
Yes! Great idea gamblor. Lets make it a made in BC bear bladder industry. The Chinese love bear bladder and other bear parts so we could make $$$ on this.
After reading the comments above I would to share two thoughts; The most intelligent species on the planet is the only one that destroys anything that they do not understand or finds to be a nuisance; And this same species seems to think that it is always someone else's fault. As for the garbage issue of course residential garbage is the most prominent contributor, but have a look around the city and notice the litter that is from our fast food outlets, and also notice what others like to do with their waste, take a look at the cut-banks.To the hunters out there, nothing against hunting, I invite you,if you are able, to take a drive in behind the Hart weigh scales during moose season and count how many hides that have been left there, could these maybe attract bears. My last thought, maybe we could try just a little harder to keep our city cleaner.
Bears are not the Problem on my Place , it's Peoples roaming Dogs, chasing the Deer and Moose I have here, not living in the City makes some think there Mutts can chase them.
Sometime ago when this story first cameout someone suggested that we should leave the city to the bears in the fall and let them do as they want, the funny thing about that is if we did leave the bears would have no reason to come into the city because there wouldn't be any of our garbage laying around
Why spend money on GPS collars? The Urban Bear Research has lost their credibility.
Remember Irene? She was a research bear, tagged and GPS collard. Irene and her three cubs were shot by a conservation officer and the RCMP along the Fraser River by the Ponderosa Mobile Home Park.
Did you hear any comments from the biologist in charge, the Northern Bear Awareness Society or the conservation officers?
Talkingbear where was Irene and what was she and her cubs doing that caused the shooting?
Talkingbear where was Irene and what was she and her cubs doing that caused the shooting?
Talkingbear what were the other 84 bears doing when they were destroyd ?
Outwest, dogs chasing wildlife can be legally dealt with. If you don't have the ability to take care of it yourself, I know who can.
