Prince George, B.C. – City  Council for Prince George will be asked to approve two bylaws that will clear the way for temporary borrowing of funds for the construction of the RCMP building.

One bylaw would allow borrowing of $11,317,000 and the other would allow the City to borrow $13,821,000.
The borrowing of the two amounts has already been approved through the alternate approval process.

Also on the agenda for this evening’s regular meeting is a proposal from the Canadian Cancer Society that City Hall introduce a bylaw that would ban the use of pesticides for cosmetic use.

Staff will present a report on making 4th Avenue a “flex” area of development between Vancouver and Winnipeg streets. The report will look at  the implications of creating a “transitional flex area that would allow mixed use on the first storey and allowing 4 storey buildings.

There will also be an update on the progress made by the Downtown Partnership in the efforts to improve downtown. That report also includes a request for $17 thousand dollars for flower baskets and a further $10 thousand for the publication of quarterly reports. The funds would come from the downtown contingency fund.

Council will be asked to approve applying for “brownfield” funding to put towards the demolition of the Prince George Hotel. The demolition is expected to top $1 million dollars.

flower pots and pretty doo dads aint gonna fix the core problem, and going into extreme debt for the cops is another question.dont they always tell us to tightnen up ,as mortagages are harder to get etc but for council its pretty obvious its a free for all with cash, fiscal responsability seems to be over and over a joke,
STOP BORROWING, PERIOD!
IF THE COPPERS WANT A NEW SHACK, LET THEM PAY FOR IT.

AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED, THE PRESENT ORIGINAL BUILDING WAS DESIGNED FOR EXPANSION. eXPAND THAT BUILDING.
Lets not forget that they are also borrowing a further $12Million for this project. So in effect they will be borrowing $38 Million.

Before this project is finished it will cost us $50 Million plus interest over 20 years. A huge expenditure for a police station,. for a City of 70,000 people and a police force of 128 police and 50 staff.

Only in the City of Prince George could such lack of concern for fiscal responsibility take place. Add to this the Citys cost for River Road, Boundry Road, Energy System, Winter Games, Wood Innovation Building, and maybe sometime down the road a PAC centre, and you can very easily see why we have no money for infrastructure.

Get a grip City Hall.
Isn't all borrowing temporary?

Is there a fact sheet that clearly shows how much the City owes, who it owes it to, what the interest rate/cost is, and how long until each debt is payed off?

The City needs to take an honest, in-depth look at its books. I, for one, am frustrated that the more I try to economize the more the various governments take - which necessitates more economizing on my part.

Pay increases of 2% and 3% per year cannot keep pace with cost increases of 5% to 20% in those same years.

When will the City show true leadership in this economy and do what most of us have had to do? Let the extras wait and take care of the needs. Pay down the high interest debt and start saving for the future.

Surely the City employs someone with a degree in economics who is overpaid and under-utilized? Get busy.
We the tax payers cannot afford the new cop shop! There is no need for such an expense; and hizoner still wants to push the performing arts centre? We're seniors, our 'income' sure can't afford this stuff. Start with the basics, the roads, fer instance!!!! And stay out of my pocketbook!
