Staff To Fill in Council on Pothole Patching Progress

Prince George, B.C. – As of the end of March, crews with the City of Prince George, have repaired 2,490 potholes. That is one of the points to be presented to Council tonight in a pothole patching update from staff.

During the same time frame last year, crews had  repaired 13,954 potholes. In the report to Council tonight, staff say the reason for the difference is the much longer snow season this year as crews had started their work in February of last year.

This year, the winter has been extra tough on the roads in Prince George. As was reported on Opinion 250 previously, the hardest hit areas were the section of Ospika between 22nd and Ferry Avenues, and Domano Boulevard from  Moriarity to Gladstone.

The section of Ospika had been resurfaced about 7 years ago using the hot in place recycling method, which staff say has “not proven effective.”

Took the classic out on Sunday, what a joke, pounded the hell out of it driving all over the road trying to avoid the potholes and gravel. Guess I'll have to leave it in the shop until September sometime when some of the holes are filled and the rocks are off the road. That will be just in time to start laying the gravel back down again. No point in having a classic vehicle in this city.
The repair of potholes doesn't seem to have been very effective either.
If they have repaired all the potholes, like the ones I have seen being repaired, there is little wonder they don't last very long.
I am no road enginerer, but logic and what I can remember of highschool science, you can't place patching compound into a we hole. The water freezes, expands and pops the patch out of place and traffic travelling over it takes care of breaking it up again.
I think that either the crew I seen doing repairs, 1- don't know what they are doing (not propery trained), or 2- they know but are just doing a slip shod job, or 3- the city needs to look at new and more efficient ways to do these repairs..because as I see it they are just wasting time and money doing things this way.
There are automated pothole patching machines successfully in use in many cities, including cities in northern climates. It's a self contained truck operated from the cab by one operator.

Potholes are blasted free of debris and
dried out with heated air before the patching compound is applied in a three step process.

It's a better more long lasting effort. It might be a good idea to get out of the rut and give this thing a try.

Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

He was right, of course.

I have lived here for 40 years and this is the worst I have ever seen the roads-They have not done a dam thing on Ospika-I will just have to wait for the civic election this fall-They might get the message.
Instead of wasting money on winter games, community energy system with the never, never payback, a back door approach to a PAC, and buying more and more property downtown that no one else wants council should concern themselves with the what the average Joe taxpayer citizen priorities are.
Prince george councillors are seemingly oblivious to the road conditions in the city.
For Rodgers and his merry band unless there is a photo-op any worthwhile projects don't even make it to the back burner.
I certainly hope there will be a new group of people stepping forward to run for city council because as the Peter Principle implies, the present group of councillors has reached their level of incompetency.
14,000 pot holes last year in 2 1/2 months. Wow, that is a lot of pot holes.
I think its an epedemic, just like the pine beetles. And the city is handling it like the NDP handled the pine beetles. Ah, lets put together a committee.
Does the city actually have a plan other than to fill in potholes. Why not look at Concrete instead of Asphalt. Interstate all over the USA, and they pour on the salt, and they go through a lot more freeze thaw cycles than we do.

They have concrete streets in Mackenzie, that they used for thirty plus years.

Why not fill the potholes with city councellors and managers??
I have noticed the worst areas seem to be pave overs, where new pavement has been laid over old pavement. It could be the bond between the old and new is not very adhesive and there is movement between the two layers as traffic passes over. Now water gets between the layers with freeze and thaw, bingo break up.

Pave overs may not be cheaper way to repave after all. What do the rest of you think?
They did an absolute pathetic attempt at repairing potholes on North Nechako some what similar to how city counsel operates. What are they waiting for to fix Ospika blvd? A pot hole hotline, what have you dolts been smokin? Bottom line is the attempt so far has been piss poor. I will be voting in the coming election but at this point I don't see anyone worth the paper I'll strike my vote on.
