Spring Just Not Co-operating

Prince George- “Spring is just not cooperating at all” says Jim Steele, Meteorologist with Environment Canada.
He says the reason our Spring is so cold, is that the jet stream is well below its normal location for this time of the year, and things are not likely to improve until that jet stream moves north.
April has been much cooler than normal in the Prince George region, with the mean temperature 2.5 degrees when the norm is plus 5. This isn’t the coldest April on record though says Steele “Back in 1954, the mean temperature for the month of April was minus 1.6, not nice at all.” He says Prince George’s normal temperature for this time of the year is a high of 14 degrees, and that hasn’t happened at all this year.
The blame can be placed on la Nina, which has impacted weather since June of last year and while it is showing signs of weakening, it isn’t likely to disappear for a couple of months.
Steele says the long range forecast calls for below normal temperatures for the balance of this month through May and June, with normal precipitation. The outlook for May, June and July is for more normal temperatures and normal precipitation, and says if you really want to stick your neck out, June, July and August will have temperatures above normal, and normal precipitation in the central part of the province, and below normal precipitation in the southern part.
The good news is that temperatures are supposed to hit the double digits this long weekend with a high of 14 Saturday and up to 13 on Sunday.
