Residents Beetle Project, the Sequel
By 250 News
The City will start hiring crew members this week to work on the beetle tree slash removal assistance to residents project. This is part two of the project and will operate until late February of next year.
Here's how it works. Residents with beetle killed trees on their property can apply to have the crews remove fences before a professional tree removal company ( hired at the residents expense) moves in to clear the dead trees. Once the trees have been removed, the crews return to clean up the slash, and put the fences back where they belong.
It can help residents reduce the cost of removing the dead trees. Last year, crews worked on 531 residential properties. The crews will also be available to help remopve slash from City parks and greenbelts and that should help reduce the City's costs in removing these trees. The crews are hired under a contract agreement with Service Canada under the Job Creation Partnership Program. The Federal government has provided a little more than two thirds of the funding in the last project, and has agreed to fund this second session. The City has budgeted $250 thousand dollars for the project this year, about one third of the cost.
Residents wanting to apply to take advantage of the service can call 564-4115 local 237.
