St. Vincent de Paul Seeing Surge In Need At Drop-In Meals

While the winter months are traditionally busy ones for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in meeting the needs of the city's hungry, Chair Bernie Gold says there has been a new slant to the need this year.

Gold says the number of family hampers handed out has been comparable to the same time last year.  But she says there's been a dramatic increase in need coming from single people.

"Our food that we serve at the Drop-In Centre, which is accessed mostly by singles, was really up," says Gold, "It was up 34-percent over January of last year, and 38-percent over February."

But Gold says an appeal for fresh fruits and vegetables has certainly helped the Society meet some of the growing demand.  "People have been dropping off fresh fruit and vegetables and it really means the difference between nutritional meals."  She says canned food is a staple, but fruit and vegetables are an absolute luxury at this time of year.

Gold adds, "We are very thankful to the people of Prince George for their support and their concern for people challenged by poverty."

St. Vincent is such an integral part of our community. We are fortunate to have committed people running it. Bless them all. Percy

Ps. Could the proper spelling be Bernie Gould?
the proper spelling is Bernie Goold
It's too bad the city wouldn't have given the money they wasted at the Torino Olympics towards the hungry people in this city. It would have done a lot more good.
What's for lunch? Sounds pretty good so far. Do I need to bring any papers or ID?
