A popsicle stick bridge ready for the ultimate test of its strength

The goal of the 9th annual 'Ultimate Bridge Building Contest':  construct the strongest bridge possible with a maximum 100 popsicle sticks and white glue.

The event was co-hosted by The Exploration Place and the Central Interior Branch of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C..

The contest was open to all ages and drew a small crowd to exploration place yesterday.

Once built, a small matchbox car must be able to traverse the bridge deck before the span is put to the ultimate test...


After being clamped in, the miniature popsicle-stick versions of the Patullo, Port Mann and other spans hand their load capacity was tested.







In the open category, the bridge withstanding the heaviest load was built by Don Williams.  It held a load of 610-pounds before 'giving in to the pressure'.
