Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Issues Addressed

There are 150 service providers ,who work directly with adults and children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, taking part in a two day conference in Prince George.
They are trying to develop more supports for people with FASD.
Employment and Income Assistance Minister Claude Richmond noted one of the major problems facing those with FASD is securing work "Today, about two-thirds of people on income assistance have disabilities or serious barriers to employment, including FASD.”
“We know that some of the best solutions to the complex problems affecting our clients can only come when families, service providers, health agencies, community groups and funding organizations work together in an integrated way,” said Richmond.
The provincial government announced major committments to children with special needs ($36 million) in the latest budget including:
· Expanding diagnostic and assessment services for children with special needs, including FASD;
· Enhancing prevention campaigns to increase awareness about the effects of alcohol use during pregnancy; and
· Providing health information on FASD for new and expectant parents through ActNow BC and the BC HealthGuide.
