Minor soccer in Prince George may have a new home.

School District 57 has already approved, in principle, the development of the warehouse on 9th Avenue for an indoor soccer facility.

Leisure Services, Tom Madden, says the Prince George Minor Soccer Association has hopes to have a facility ready for the fall, which would allow them to carry on with their programs over the winter.

Madden says while the closure of some schools has caused a dip in the inventory of spaces for some indoor programs, development of this warehouse, and the construction of the Northern Sport Centre will more than make up for the losses. The two facilities, says Madden would also allow for a different mix of sports not currently playable over winter because existing spaces just aren’t big enough to accommodate the configurations necessary for some sports, like soccer.

Madden says meetings will soon be held with the School District 57 and the Soccer Association to see what kind of changes need to be made. Then, the City would have to arrange a lease agreement with the School District, and would sub-let the building to the Soccer Association. The Association is expected to pay for all the renovations so the actual development and operations of the facility come at no cost to the City or the School District.

While this is a positive step forward, the soccer community deserves better.

The city needs to build a proper indoor sports centre, preferably a four-plex.

Based on the experience of other communities, a proper facility can be built for a few million bucks and can pay for itself through operations.

You can't say that about an outdoor ice oval.

Didn't Quesnel just build (or are currently) an indoor soccer facility? The UNBC Sports Centre will have indoor soccer pitches when it is completed, one more step in the right direction for the city.
