The B.C. Government and the B.C. Medical Association's Board of Directors have reached a tentative contract agreement.

In announcing the deal, B.C. Finance Minister Carole Taylor says, "At this point, I want to refrain from commenting on the full range of details of the tentative agreement until physicians, themselves, have been briefed by the BCMA Board."

Taylor says, if approved, the contract would span six years and include a combination of general compensation increases and targeted funding to address critical patient care issues such as full service family practice.

"This agreement is a good agreement for all groups of B.C. physicians," says BCMA President Dr. Michael Golbey, "It represents an important first step in restoring a positive working relationship between physicians and the provincial government."  He adds, "This will allow doctors to contribute to the decisions made about health care in B.C."

Health Minister George Abbott is also applauding the draft agreement, "Congratulations to both the negotiating teams for taking on this challenge and working hard to get a tentative agreement in the spirit of what's best for patients and B.C. physicians."

More than 8,800 doctors are eligible to vote on the pact over the next month.

This is the 6th tentative agreement the provincial government has reached with public sector employees since March 2nd.

Owl on NDP Simpson - "Prior to running Simpson was a member of the BC Liberals. Why he changed, I do not know.
Maybe he will cross the floor tomorrow, but I doubt it. He is of the opinion he can do more in opposition than he can on the government side of the house..."

No wonder Simpson left the BC Liberals! Simpson likes it in the cheap seats, where he can whine and bellyache, do nothing, have no responsibility, take no responsibity and be lazy.
No wonder Simpson bailed out of the BC Liberal Party!

Well done, Gordon Campbell and Carole Taylor!

It means that doctors will not be shutting down their offices one day per week as they often did during the "balanced/surplus budgets" NDP decade!

What a relief!
I congratulate both parties for doing the right thing and coming to an agreement before things escalated.

I can only hope that an example has been set for others to reach an agreement and settle in a mature, responsible fashion.

The last thing our province needs is more labour disruptions. For any reason. Percy
