Air Quality Advisory in Effect

Forget about stoking the fire, unless it is the only source of heat you have, the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection has issued an Air Quality advisory for Prince George due to high levels of fine particulate matter.

All residents, and especially those who suffer from cardiac and respiratory diseases should be aware that these particulate levels could cause adverse health effects. Residents should also be aware that, although the Ministry only issues advisories when the air quality objective is exceeded, health effect risks from fine particulate start well below that level. The Air quality objective for PM10 is 50 µg/m3 for a 24-hour average.

The Advisory means the City's Clean Air Bylaw kicks in.  That means no use of wood-burning appliances, (unless its the only source of heat)  no open burning, or land-clearing burning .

This Air Quality Advisory is expected to be in effect at least for the next 24-hours, with an update to be provided tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m., or when changes occur.

Until people are ready to stand up to Canfor Pulp and Paper division and the Huskey oil refinery, we've lost all rights to complain. Heck, if we'd only face the true problem, we wouldn't need to be petitioning for a Northern cancer clinic... our stats would be in the norm and we wouldn't qualify / need one.
Totally Agree. When are we going to wake up and smell the roses.. Every traveller coming into PG recognizes the problem but we the locals seem to ignore it... Maybe the smell of money has gone to our heads
Our sense of smell is just gone, period.

So, now it's the lungs that are trying to filter the dirt out.

We need more immediate effort to reduce the particulates in our air shed over PG.

I can't support any further delays in improving our air quality. I don't care what it cost. The skyrocketing cost of healthcare and shortened lifespan is more important to me than cost to industry.

We are still paying for it. So, what's the difference? Percy
The city fathers really do not care about this; the local MLAs do not care about this; the Chamber of Commerce does not care about it; IPG does not care about it; major industry does not care about it; the ministry and the Minister responsible do not cae about it .....

Those who have the ability to do something about it have had 10 years or so to clean it up since the **** hit the fan on this.

It is very frustrating to have such people in leadership roles in this community. Talk and no action. Jago ... sure, he won't accomplish anything either. This is much bigger than him. This is provincial. They must decide they want it fixed and simply get to it.

Mills, CN yard, Truckers belching diesel ... all in the bowl .....

Stop them rather than stopping the few fireplaces in this community and it will be fixed quickly.

It would be interesting to see how quickly the air clears up if those sources were shut down at the next episode start.
