The Hospital Employees Union has reached a deal with the Province under the new bargaining framework.

Under the proposed 4 year deal,  the  average increase will be 10.8 percent, although some workers will see a wage hike of  8.5%  and the highest increase will be 32 % over the  life of the contract.  Because the deal has been developed before the March 31st deadline,  workers will get the early  signing bonus of $3,700 plus there will be an additional lump-sum payment of $500  to ( as the union says ) "recognize  past skill enhancements"

The Union says  the package would also  give workers improved job protection  to prevent job losses through  contracting out and privatization.

Full details will be presented to the workers over the next few days and ratification will take place over the next three weeks.  The Union's contract negotiators are recommending members ratify the package.

H-E-U covers a variety of health care workers including classifications in nursing,  trades and maintenance, diagnostic testing, logistic and supplies, cleaning and dietary, medical records, human resources, information systems and others.

Great news!

This of course brings focus yet again onto Jinny Simms, BCTF combative nature and posturing. I doubt she and the BCTF have the ability to work out a settlement. More aptly, I doubt she has the desire... perhaps she simply likes the attention she gets from being so militant. Not what I as a parent of school kids want to see... being turned into a political pawn of the BCTF.

Without the endless controversies the public exposure factor would be far too minimal. The union is a perfect catapult for those with higher aspirations.

Expect to see her soon either in Victoria or Ottawa, NDP MLA or NDP MP.

It happened/happens all the time.
Kudos to both parties for sparing us the shrill rhetoric of another labor dispute.
