City residents stopped by the Royal Canadian Legion to sign a banner

Prince George residents turned out in force yesterday to sign a five-metre long banner that read, "Support Our Troops", destined for Afghanistan.

The banner was on display at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No43 on 7th Avenue for most of the day.  And sitting quietly to one side of the table was city resident, Ed Gauthier.

Gauthier's son, Ryan Zwicker, is a Canadian solider who's serving in Afghanistan.  Gauthier says his son is in intelligence with the Canadian Army and arrived in Kandahar last month on a tour of duty until August.

The local dad says he plans to hand-deliver the banner to Ryan when they meet in London next month, as the soldier has a three-week furlough.

Gauthier says he's hopeful the banner will boost morale.  "Let's keep their morale up because when morale is down, that's when accidents happen," he says, "And we want to keep our boys safe over there."

He says
people who came out to sign his banner were very supportive and he was surprised by the turnout.
Gauthier says he's travelling to Quesnel today as extended family members want a chance to pen their best wishes.  And he plans to set up shop again next Saturday at the Legion between 1pm and 8:30pm.
