The Fraser Basin Council and Fraser-Fort George Regional District would like to take some concrete steps to shore up the Naver Creek this spring and summer.

It was January of 2005 that a huge ice jam threatened flooding and prompted the Regional District to issue a Local State of Emergency and evacuate residents.

Since then, a 40-thousand dollar consultants' report has identified 50 sites along the creek that need some kind of attention -- from urgent to low priority -- to mitigate the risk of flooding.

Fraser Basin Council Regional Coordinator, Joan Chess, says the consultants didn't do a cost estimate.  "That's part of the next step, is to get an idea of what needs to be done and how much (each project would cost)," says Chess, "They (the consultants) made general recommendations about what types of methods could be used at these sites."

She says the recommendations include everything from re-vegetation along the creek's shores to drainage control, to more costly measures like installing rip-wrap.

Chess says at a public meeting with Hixon residents in January, many expressed an interest in taking on some of the projects -- as a community effort or as individual landowners -- so, she says, they'll go back out to touch base with residents in the next couple of weeks.

Once the actual work sites are decided upon, Chess says they'll apply for funding under the Provincial Emergency Program's "Natural Hazards Mitigation Fund".  And she's hopeful some mitigation efforts will start within the next few months.
