The Quality of Life Survey results have been presented to Council. The survey was conducted in October of 2005 . The survey was sent out to 2500 homes. With 519 respondents, that was below the number who took part in the '98 survey (723).
Here are some of the highlights:
The average age of participants in 2005 was 51. In 1998, the average age was 46.
In comparing the two surveys, results show younger participants (aged 18-34) did not feel their health was as good in 2005 as it was in '98.
People in the 2005 survey were a bit more satisfied with their financial security than their 1998 counterparts.
On Questions about Air Quality:
95.3% says air quality is a concern
39.8% believe air quality has become worse during the time they have lived here
60.2% believe air quailty has not changed or improved during the time they have lived here.
One person had commented on their survey that "If you think the air quality is bad now, you should have been here in the 60's and 70's when there were more mills running and no dusters."
On Questions about Food:
40.1% say they grow their own fruit or vegetables
65.8% say they never hunt or fish
71.4% visit the Farmers Market at least once a year
94.8% would visit the Farmer's Market at least once year if it were indoor with a seasonal outdoor market.
On Questions about Recycling:
2 out every three say they use the drop-depot recycling system.
Those who don't use the system say the would recycle if there was a curbside service
Majority said they would be willing to pay $5 a month for curbside recycling
